The REAL real question is: How soon until I can get my activation and migrate to Windows 10 Retail?

to be totally honest i don't see what the big deal with the RTM date, Its not going to on the shelf of your local computer shop any time soon, its all download so there is no need for MS to put it on a dvd, pack it and rush it off to the shop, we could have a different upadte the day before the 29th this month.

Now wait a minute. . .according to some folks here on the 10s it cannot be ready some day this week. . .it just can't. again according the these (some) folks Windows 10 just isn't ready for prime time, so how is it that Microsoft could even be talking about releasing the RTM by July 9th. If Ten is released in RTM then it just can't be ready. . .

Laptops/prebuilt desktops will start shipping with W.10 after July 29th (where most consumers get their Windows licenses)

RTM doesn't really need to be "ready for prime time" as long as it can be patched to whatever is current (hopefully ready for prime time) when the consumer starts up the OS for the first time. Anyone that buys an OEM device on July 29th will likely have a bit of updating to do even on July 29th, maybe even a new build.

Edited: Frankly, if it weren't for the handful of people that would indubitably bitch that they were being forced to have an internet connection; they could just install an updater on OEM devices to update to the latest and greatest upon first boot.

Well, quite frankly, I would never buy a computer that *requires* an internet connection to function. I also don't need to reinstall the OS on the regular basis. Thus the idea of regular new builds is not sitting well with me. I will certainly not make any changes to my main machine come July 29th.

This. Service packs (new builds) should remain a big deal like XP/Vista/7/8

They could always have the option to install from a preinstalled ISO (RTM) or download & install the latest bypassing the need to go to an older build (RTM) to update. Personally, I'd rather have a clean install from the get go than have an updated RTM to deal with.
