Hi Insiders,

My name is Joshua and I'm a Program Manager on the Office Global Service & Experiences team.

In February, we quietly released the Translator for Outlook add-in, showcasing the launch of Outlook Mobile add-ins. With add-ins now available for Mac Insiders, and given how global this audience is, we thought we should let you know about it as well!

Translator for Outlook is an add-in that enables you to translate email messages on the fly. It's great for anyone who works in a second language every day and wants to read messages in their native language. Examples include international teams and companies, exchange students, pen pals, and language learners.

The add-in works across all Outlook clients: Outlook 2016, Outlook 2016 for Mac, Outlook on the web, Outlook.com, and the Outlook for iOS (coming soon to Android). Install it once from the Office Store, and it'll be available automatically wherever you use Outlook.

We partnered closely with the Microsoft Translator team in Microsoft Research to bring this to life, and are happy to say that we now support 60 languages for translation. As for translation quality, stay tuned for a big improvement coming soon for ten languages, when Microsoft's neural network (NN) text translation officially moves to production (it's currently in preview—you can read about it in this blog post).

What's New?

  • Language auto-detection. Email content is a bit different than web site content, in terms of both formatting and language composition, and we worked hard to accommodate that. For example, you could be on an email thread with global colleagues—such as a modern Outlook Group, or perhaps an interest-based distribution list—where different languages are mixed together. When you want to read that whole thread in your native language—shouldn't it just work? Translator tries to achieve that, and keep the interface super simple.

  • Cross-device experience. If you use Translator across devices (with the different Outlook apps), you'll notice that there's a different interface for the "desktop" and "mobile" flavors (plus some behind-the-scenes performance optimizations)—but wherever you use it, the capabilities are equal.

Get Started
1. Install the add-in from the Office Store
2. From the Home tab, select Translate Message.

3. In the Translator pane, select the language to which you'll translate your message.

Translator for Outlook is part of the add-ins launch on Outlook for Mac, and is available to users with:

  • Office Insider Slow for Mac
  • Exchange Online and/or Outlook.com mailbox
  • Outlook 2016 for Mac (and/or one of the other Outlook apps mentioned above)

If you're having trouble installing the add-in, please check out the Troubleshooting section in the "How to use & help - Translator for Outlook on Mac, Windows, and the web" link.
