Bulk standard WU took 35 mins

    BUT

shot straight to previous build Desktop, hit restart at WU (still there) now configuring Updates.

Not true. Various ESD machines (UUP disabled) downloading 15042 at the moment.
Not here...non-UUP goes nowhere, repeatedly, after reboots. My UUP download is stuck @ 10%--I even downloaded the full UUP file set from another source, put them in the appropriate software distribution download folder--WU doesn't even see it apparently. Deleted ~bt and all Software distribution files before that in an effort to start over--still sticking at 10%--even after resetting Windows Update via the control-panel Troubleshooting App--which reports that it repairs several errors--all to no avail. Getting nowhere fast with this one...more delivery-system fun from Microsoft...! Grrr-r-r-r-r-r....

Geeks, important information regarding ESD, I just posted this in ESD to ISO tutorial:

    Note   Note

    PLEASE NOTICE:

It seems that Microsoft has killed the ESD upgrade method. Even if you have UUP disabled / ESD enabled, build 15042 upgrade does not contain install.esd file. Instead the upgrade files can be found in folder
    C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\d00630587706295696417aabf4685ed4.

Notice that the folder name (hexadecimal string) will be something different in next build upgrades.

You don't have to re-enable UUP in registry if you have already downloaded upgrade. As long as you have not restarted to perform the upgrade itself, ISO image can be done from files in above mentioned folder as told in UUP to ISO tutorial: UUP to ISO - Create Bootable ISO from Windows 10 Build Upgrade Files

OK, went well with UUP, all done now. First thing I noticed that Start > Settings > Security and Updates, WD opens "Windows Defender Security Center instead".
WD opens normally from other places.

    Hi,

Had UUP turned off but it installed using UUP method nonetheless as per Kari's posting.
    R.I.P. ESD upgrade ?
