So is it cheaper for the U.K. to buy American goods or is it more expensive? If I understand the exchange rate. Something that cost $100 usd would only cost about $50 British pounds depending on the exchange rate.

It has always been a bone of contention that the same goods in the UK are far more expensive than those in the USA, especially electrical goods. Televisions, Hi-fi etc. The exchange rate is about 1.5 dollars to the pound.

Take your chances with HMRC by all means, but if it was that easy nobody would buy anything from this country and would all therefore be avoiding taxes.

Do take into account that in my case I am below a certain threshold.
Once past that it becomes very uncompetitive, what with import duty, vat etc.
