    Known issue. The definition version you have is the latest anyone here has. 1.235.2715.0. They were created by MS on Monday, 2/13 at 1:36am Pacific Time (Redmond, WA). Even the MS direct link still shows that version.

    If anyone has a later version, please post.

    I had to turn on Periodic scanning (again) then WU downloaded definitions: 1.235.2849.0. I have a 3rd party AV (Vipre)

    I think you'll find that setting won't hold thru a restart. Bug somewhere. I un-registered my 3rd party, MBAM, so I could also use the Defender on-demand. But that kills the update thru the UI. Have to get them thru WU, like I just did. Quite a mess.

    Surprise, it did stick through a restart just now, but has turned itself off before.

    When switching motherboard you may have to call Microsoft for re-activation. You need to have a good explanation so they will allow it to be activated. A good reason would be that the old MB died, and the manufacturer/retailer swapped the MB for a different one.

    I am not 100% sure if they will activate a new MB of different brand though...

    I get this without errors from an automatic update:
    Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 15031 for PC-2017_02_15_08_55_252.png

    then manual update:

    then

    So it's working, but saying otherwise?

    @Fafhrd

    Chris, that pretty much nails it on the head. I just fired up a 15031 VM that has absolutely nothing on it but pure MS. As clean and virgin as you can get. The sequence of events was exactly as you posted. Exactly. It updated after giving all signs it didn't/couldn't. This screenshot is from the VM settings Defender page, to verify it's up to date. There's a bad bug somewhere. With no 3rd party anything, well........
