I most certainly will take an axe to it. If it can't be configured to the way that suits me then I will not be using it. I have Windows 8.1 on 2 machines and I never see the store on those so I am sure it can be hidden well enough. We have 3 laptops in the household and those are the only mobile computers I am interested in.

Run this command in an Admin PowerShell and you'll get rid of the Store:
    (in Build 10162 anyway...)
Could have negative repercussions though. Only Apps that stay are Feedback, Settings, Edge, Cortana and Support.

Many moons ago, "Programs" used to be commonly called "Applications".

When I say "App" I mean software:
    • With limited functions (possibly a cut-down version of a "Program")
    • Which is designed to be able to run on the limited hardware of phones/tablets

When I say "Program" I mean software:
    • That consumes CPU, RAM and storage space the way an alcoholic sucks down beer
    • That has literally hundreds (if not thousands) of features/functions
    • That may even require multiple monitors and other hardware (e.g. graphics cards)

"Program" examples might include, but are not limited to:
    • Adobe CS6
    • Apache or IIS
    • CAD programs
    • Visual Studio
    • VMware or Hyper-V

The Weather App is the one that is named most times in discussions.
Given that even I can retrieve weather info from the Internet using a few lines of code, retrieving & displaying weather information is ideally suited to the "App Paradigm".

News articles/links are another good candidate for "App-ification".

Or the free Excel App, which although officially named as "Excel Mobile App" runs perfectly well on a desktop computer, the word Mobile in its name only meaning that it also runs on mobile devices:
As usual you have grabbed "the wrong end of the stick".
I'm starting to suspect that it is not accidental.

There is no reason why "Apps" wouldn't run on a desktop that uses the same OS.
In fact, they undoubtedly run better on a desktop than on a phone/tablet.
I suspect that the Excel App runs much better on a desktop than on a phone.

    The Excel App sounds interesting.
If the free Excel App (the picture appears to be PowerPoint) has all of the (local) features that Excel 365 and Excel 2013 have, how can MS rent/sell the latter 2 products?

If someone only runs App-style software on their desktop PC, they could have saved themselves hundreds of dollars by simply buying a phone/tablet (which is one of the reasons cited for the decline in desktop PC sales).

it is not a massive difference. and i have bought programs for my phone, one is called android, also any drivers for any application i run and many many more. the difference is minuscule, but there is a difference. just not the one you think it is. some of you are getting way too caught up in the terms, instead of the application. excuse the pun. lol.
most programs are apps, and some apps are programs. but the only difference is a program can access hardware without human interaction, or even an os, where an app depends on the os, and is for human interaction. that's it.
for instance, when you click on ms word, it is an application, as is that hidden file that runs the printer spooler launched only by the OS. The two programs depend on the OS, whereby the OS itself or your internal BIOS programs are not 'apps' in the technical sense as they communicate directly with the computer hardware itself. i hope this helps...

    • A computer program is a set of instructions that can be executed on a computer.
    • An application is software that directly helps a user perform tasks.
    • The two intersect, but are not synonymous. A program with a user-interface is an application, but many programs are not applications.

Yup because the store is needed to sync licenses and update.

@Wynona you can check the manufacturers website of your computer by looking up the specifications of your model and see if your computer came with a Blu-Ray enabled drive & see if a software download is available. If the software is made for Windows 8x or 7 it may install by using compatibility mode.

On my desktop that has Windows 10 Insider Preview I purchased a retail drive that is Blu-Ray enabled and came with an OEM installation disk. However I am using an saved updated downloadable version available through the application update function and used Windows 8 compatibility mode.

It's an age old adage that many people use - "You shouldn't talk about religion or politics." Why is that?

The obvious answer is that they can cause conflict.

Let's add "App or Program" to that.
