MAKE SURE the upgrade is fully downloaded before trying to upgrade, even if the Update screen says it is ready!
Most of the problems with the upgrades that I have seen here are probably due to something that MS hinted at. MS said that the upgrade LOOKS like it is stuck at 0% while actually things are going on in the background but just are not showing up on the Update screen.
I have a suspicion that the Update screen and the ACTUAL UPDATE are not at all in sync. My update screen LOOKED like my computer was "ready" to upgrade but in reality I saw that the system optimization is still busy downloading the update (and I have a very fat pipe). And indeed, the upgrade failed. Next time I tried, I waited until my task manager processes and CPU went down to its normal baseline and the System Optimization process was at zero and THEN tried the upgrade again. This time it went absolutely smoothly.
I'm not quite sure what you mean by this. There is no option to Individually download then upgrade then restart. Once you start the process with check for updates, the only question/answer is Restart. Yes, lots of stuff going on inside the box. I posted that a while back. Pardon, but I'm missing something.

Yes, I have seen that too, 100% download may be just as wrong as when it stays at 0% but it's actually downloading full speed. Install.esd also doesn't get formed until few minutes (on slower systems maybe even later) after it prompts to restart. I usually spend that time preparing system, making ISO etc.

As CountMike mentions, Macrium Reflect Free can do everything you need to get done. See tutorial for instructions and download link: Macrium Reflect - Backup and Restore

Thank you CountMike Kado and Kari! Seems my old eyes managed NOT to see the free version (of course eye surgery 2 days ago may not have helped LOL) As always the help here from y'all makes me know why this is my only site as a go to with issues and information on everything insider.

    Again very much appreciated

It is VERY confusing. In the last three builds, my Update screen has been definitely squirrley. It may give me the Restart button while it is STILL DOWNLOADING. That is what happened to me and the upgrade failed. I have also seen it say that the download was at 100% then promptly start downloading at 0%! Sometimes the Update button will reappear even after the download is complete and/or the install update looks like it has finished. Strange stuff.
What I now look for is to see that there is no longer a 12-15% CPU usage for the System Optimization Process running in task manager, the delivery mechanism for the actual update. Don't rush the update or restart if there is still CPU activity going on. Better yet, let it sit overnight and let it automatically update itself. That worked well for me for 15014.
Obviously MS needs to fix this, heh.

2.5 hours start to finish on my Toshiba laptop. Longest by far of any IP I've installed.

None of the bugs introduced in 15014 appear to be fixed.

Yeah, I just went shopping and got back, 15-20 minute round trip, and now have this:
    Attachment 118885
OCing the RAM to match the CPU & Cache multiplier settings worked!
Excellent tip, I'm going to update the next IP with cranked up VM settings for the amount of RAM dedicated to this VM. But in my case the hog was the % CPU it used during the 15019 update.

I agree. The entire process is at best wacky! If you're determining that it's still downloading when you see the Restart, remember..... If you have the Share (torrent like) option on, all that router activity is your data going out.

Do you have the "Updates from more than one place" box checked in the Advanced settings in Updates and Security? If you do, your computer will be busy for hours uploading the update to the internet even after you have finished downloading your own copy of the update.

I have a laptop that I only occasionally*tried various Redstone 2 builds*upon. After keeping the builds for a day or so I always use Macrium Reflect to roll back to the current released Windows 10 version.

After finding build 15019 worked pretty well*on another dual boot machine, I figured I'd give it a shot on the described laptop. I couldn't believe it, from start*of download to*signed in an running took only 25 minutes! *

Maybe the key to the new update process is to be updating a Redstone 1 machine to Redstone 2 machine? After all that is where the majority of*next upgrades*will be occurring. *

While Insider to new Insider builds appear to be sketchy at the moment, a pure Redstone 1 to Insider Redstone 2 upgrade was stunningly good.

EDIT: The stupid stars * still appear when doing posts.

JUST posting about this when your post came up. I had indeed turned off the peer-to-peer option before this update was released but I still had a ton of activity on the System Optimization Process for a good couple of hours or so. Considering my internet speed hits 20MB/s or better on downloads, I wonder if there is still uploading going on? I will check the my upload activity during the next build if I see the update downloading.
It also could be that we were all hammering the poor download server from Microsoft after we had turned off the peer to peer.
