This new update method is very slow (started at 3:30 PM, finished at 8:30 PM).

Yeah, they haven't worked the kinks out of it yet.
I wholeheartedly recommend switching back to ESD upgrade, at least for now as long as it seems to work perfectly. You get a bit bigger download but the upgrade is faster and more reliable.

An extract from a post in ESD to ISO tutorial thread:

    Tip   Tip
If having a possibility to make an ISO image and create your own install media weighs more than reduced download size, you must manually disable UUP in Windows registry.

Both of the following DWORDs have by default value 1 (UUP enabled). You must change both values to 0 (UUP disabled) to keep getting the ESD file and full build download:

    Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>Microsoft>Windows>CurrentVersion>WindowsUpdate>Orchestrator
    DWORD: EnableUUPScan

    Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>Microsoft>WindowsUpdate
    DWORD: SupportsUUP

These DWORDS must have the same value, 1 for UUP enabled, 0 for UUP disabled.

If you want to you can also use following registry scripts to switch to ESD upgrade or UUP upgrade. Just download the one you need and run it to change relevant values in registry:

Thanks to esteemed fellow geek @f14tomcat for these registry scripts :)

If you have already upgraded when UUP was enabled, you do not have and can't get the ESD file. Do the above registry changes before next build upgrade to assure you will get ESD file.

If your upgrade has been downloaded and prepared but you have not yet clicked Restart now button in Windows Update to start upgrade, you can do the following to redownload upgrade and get the ESD file:
    - Edit the registry as told above
    - Open Disk Clean-up > Clean up system files
    - Select Temporary Windows installation files, click OK:

    Attachment 112932

    - Wait until clean up is done
    - In Settings app > Windows Update, click Restart now
    - Windows will now restart for upgrade but as no upgrade files will be found, it boots back to desktop
    - Now let Windows Update to download the upgrade again, this time it will be the full upgrade and include the ESD file

Thanks for fellow member @Bat 1 for registry tip.

Yes. I ended up doing that but thought I'd give UUP a chance first just in case they had fixed it. Pretty much a case of hope over experience.

    Okay, I think I get it; if you don't have an active window up or mouse/keyboard action on any display, Cortana will mount queries in full screen;
and the 'applet' is fully interactive! :)

What's going on with this, Kari? I'm reading the pretty yellow page, and it goes to no graphics, then back to graphics!

Is it my machine, or are you editing?

I used UUP upgrades for all machines and VMs, except one, which was still trying (and failing) to download 15007.

That one VM was my only case of things going stupid during the upgrade process.

Strange . . . When I've been away from my computer for awhile and have to input my password, Windows "rediscovers" and shows the contents of my WD My Passport external drive. It doesn't, though, "rediscover" my Toshiba external drive.

Are both connected to that same USB port via A USB hub, or different ports?

If different ports, check both ports to see if Windows is turning either one off to save power. Or, alternatively, adjust your and power settings to disable selective USB power reduction.

On my computer the UUP upgrade went better than I expected. It started out downloading very slow than all of a sudden the download speeded up and downloaded very quickly. The install went very smoothly also. I didn't have any problems like I did when I was dual booting. I've only had two very minor problems on this build that was very easy to fix and one older program that wont run. The first problem was that web pages wouldn't load. I disconnected then reconnected my Wi-Fi and that solved that problem. The second problem was with my Accuweather App. I had to uninstall then reinstall it to get it working correctly. The third problem is that ImgBurn doesn't work. It's no big deal as the the burner in File Explorer works OK. I found this out when I tried to burn my ISO to a DVD.

Yeah, I've had also issues with imgburn but it is quite old [in computer terms]. Last time I tried it AVG flagged the .exe file as infected.
    The Official ImgBurn Website
I've decided I can afford the ~$40 per new Operating System for Roxio Easy CD and DVD Creator at my local Wal*Mart [40 miles away], doesn't give me any problems. But if I were into creating DVD movies I'd probably go for a fuller suite of applications.

Both are on separate USB 3 ports, John. And I don't have any power saving modes set; all is at default, which is Balanced.

Edit: Here's a snip of my USB settings; the only option is to remove the device, which I don't want to do. :)
