    Re: Posts 141 & 146:

I had to check if I really was wrong or if my memory served me right, that it is possible to get fast ring build upgrades without an MS or Insider account.

I take my earlier words back, I mean I said first it is possible, then checked which accounts I had on those test machines, and admitted being wrong. BUT: I admitted being wrong too early: I had to test this so I installed 10130 on a Hyper-V vm just now, created a local account, and yes I was right all the time, I simply set it to fast ring and its now downloading the 10158 ESD upgrade.

Might be that this has changed with todays build but let's repeat this:

    Note   Note
You can clean install an earlier build of Windows 10 using a local account, then without creating and using any MS accounts whatsoever, all the time only using the local account, set the WU to fast ring and upgrade all the way to at least build 10158. I am not sure if this ends with build 10158 but at least up to this build it is possible.

In other words, you don't have to be an Insider to be on fast ring and get upgrade builds through Windows Update.

    Well, alright then...

Everything I pinned is there, just invisible. Restarting explorer.exe fixed it.

Okay, but the original question was "How did you get it to stay on the insider program whilst on a local account??"

and the answer is - you can't. Starting in 10158, you have to add the Insider function back in, and you must use your Insider-registered MS account to do it.

    EDIT: From the Insider news:

Insider Hub & Windows Feedback app
Because we’re getting ready for the final release, we’re removing a few things we don’t expect to ship to everyone. So starting with the next build, the Insider Hub will no longer be pre-installed. Windows Insiders can reinstall the Insider Hub app through the following steps:

    • Go to Settings, System, Apps & features
    • Click Manage optional features then Add a feature
    • Select the Insider Hub entry (the list is in alphabetical order) and click Install.

You will have to go through this process with each build we flight prior to the final release on July 29th, but once we start flighting new builds after July 29th it will be preinstalled again.
The Windows Feedback app will continue to be included in builds and in the final release. But as I noted above, the Windows Feedback app will have functionality specific to Windows Insiders who are registered for the program with their MSA connected to their PC.

    and

As long as you are running an Insider Preview build and connected with the MSA you used to register, you will receive the Windows 10 final release build and remain activated. Once you have successfully installed this build and activated, you will also be able to clean install on that PC from final media if you want to start over fresh.

    and

If you don’t have your Microsoft Account (MSA) connected to your PC, starting in the next build you’ll start seeing notifications asking you to do so. You’ll need to connect the MSA that you registered for the Windows Insider Program with (and accepted the “Microsoft Windows Insider Program Agreement”) in order to continue receiving new Windows 10 Insider Preview builds (both Fast and Slow rings) from Windows Update. If you already have your MSA connected to your account on your PC, then you’re all set. We’re introducing new infrastructure in Windows Update to help us deliver new builds more effectively to Windows Insiders, and ensure that we’re flighting builds to people who have registered and opted in to the program. Connecting your MSA also allows seamless access to Windows Insider-only functionality in the Windows Feedback app and Insider Hub too.
This change is for the Windows Insider Program ONLY, and is specific to how we’re delivering the Insider Preview builds. Once available on July 29th, you do not need an MSA to upgrade Windows 10 on your Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 PCs if they are not receiving Insider Preview builds. You will not be required to use an MSA on new PCs that come with Windows 10 preinstalled or clean installed from media. Some features in Windows 10 do require an MSA to use, such as downloading apps in the Windows Store.

    Hi there

Mine seems to be updating fine from build 10147. Can restore build 10130 if I get any problems with it. My build 10147 just used a LOCAL account and I got the update.

    Downloading just fine.

I'll see what happens abot Local and Ms accounts. I don't care if I have to use an Ms account to continue the Insider program but I want to run windows using a LOCAL account only.

    Cheers

Seems strange reading the above posts, something is not right some ware.
I can’t get the new build even as an insider, just because the MS account needs verification so how can one get it with a local account.

Sorry but very clearly the answer is Yes, you can. It seems the build 10158 changes this but from the beginning to this build it has been and still is totally possible, you have had no obligation to use an MS account.

Question was HAS it been possible earlier and IS it possible to be on the fast ring when the computer has never had an MS account. The answer is yes, it is possible. From the first build October 1st to this we got now, it has been possible, still is possible for this last upgrade.

You could get the ISO for the October 1st build, install it using a local account, set yourself on the fast ring never creating nor using an MS Account, and now finally after upgrading through each build upgrade to 10158. I repeat: with a local account only.

Or is it restricted to only one per IP address?

    Hi there

I think there's some confusion here.

I think you have to register initially with an Ms account - however that said I am using the PC with purely a LOCAL account.

I think the confusion arises because of the way Windows was installed a few builds ago -- If you disconnected from the Internet the setup would continue using a LOCAL accounrt.

All my upgrades since then have upgraded using the LOCAL account.

There is of course an Ms account that I registered with.

    Cheers
