    Neither I...

Weird stuff, I wonder what version of windows they refer to in that article, I use 1511 and I work flawlessly without adds of any kind (of course, disabled some useless resource hogging tasks updated latest patches and then disabled Windows Update service).

I just upgraded my VGA drivers, and chipset. BOOM, rock solid. Also, I use Firefox (faster than Chrome and doesn't cry about accelerated canvases...)

I reckon if it's bundled it still counts as a download even if you can decline installing it, to be honest it's becoming a pest, the number of things that it's bundled with. IMO good software does not need forced downloads.
I'll stick to Firefox which I've used on Windows and Linux for a very long time.
Anything that tries to sneak onto my computer by the back door, like Chrome, I also consider a pest & flat out will not use and immediately get rid of it. In fact I consider it to be what Malwarebytes calls a PUP.

What about what Microsoft keeps doing, changing default search providers and home pages in IE and edge every other update?

I dislike Chrome for one reason:

If you have even one browser window open or more of course and extentions the resources it consumes is a bit much. Looking in the Task Manager on other users computers shows a HOARD of Chrome entries. Hmm....then again...memory is cheap.

Firefox is my preferred browser. I have been using it from the early Netscape days. I prefer the Firefox interface and its many customizable features. I also like the ability to download YouTube videos with an add-on Firefox extension.
Same here - I particularly like Firefox extension "Dark Background and Light Text". It is so much more comfortable when browsing. I wish the others would provide dark themes and I would consider them more often.

I have switched to Opera and love love love it! I recommend that if you have not tried it recently that you do so.

You might be pleasantly surprised (as I was) that it is quick, visually pleasing and for my work flow just works better than Chrome.

It also has an import feature which brings in ALL you bookmarks, cookies, and other setting from Chrome so you lose nothing and the transition is seamless!

Give it a go and see if you like it as much as I do after just a few days of using it.

Does Opera offer a dark theme like this which I use in Firefox?
