Cool stuff, if true. I do all my installs from thumb drives. I wonder if they will be read only? Or have the option to make them read only. That way they don't get accidentally erased or messed up.

Not sure if this is actually a GOOD route -- USB sticks can get accidentally erased - and if they are Non erasable then you have storage / other problems - you don't want to encourage people to create hoards of external media storage devices.
Downloading an ISO and converting it for Boot on a USB stick via a program like RUFUS is IMO the best way.
I sometimes like to boot two or three different OS'es from the same USB stick --quite easy with a 16 / 32 / 64 GB stick.

I just use diskpart. A few commands and its done. Bootable and good for legacy and UEFI installs.

The CURRENT system of getting people to try and restore etc from those horrible hidden partitions IMO is far more complicated - not only for a typical user but even quite experienced ones -- I've often had prooblems with those.
It's good that Windows 10 will at least be available on some sort of PHYSICAL MEDIA. I always HATED with a passion those "Hidden Partition" systems when computers stopped being sold without a proper PHYSICAL piece of Windows media.
The actual cost would have probably added about 0.30 EUR -- hardly significant for 300 - 2000 (or even more) EUR purchases.

Will USB be cheaper or more expensive? Will they offer ones that don't need keys that already have a oem or retail key?

Keys are easy to add, all you do is add a PID.txt file. The issue with that is though, once you do that you can then only use that install media on the one PC.
They could code Windows 10 to look for OEM embedded keys like Windows 8 install media does. Then if it finds one it just uses it automatically. If non is present you get prompted to enter a key. You could use that thumb drive on multiple PC's with no issues.

SourceMicrosoft is reportedly planning a new change that would help Windows 10 become available for more people across the world and make installing the operating system faster and easier.
According to a report by German site WinFuture, which cites people close to the matter, Microsoft is planning to launch Windows 10 on USB sticks too, in addition to the traditional DVDs, thus offering another install option for users worldwide.
Both the 32- and the 64-bit version of Windows 10 will arrive on USB flash pens, but the aforementioned site claims that both versions will be running on the same drive and users will be allowed to choose which one to install.
This is clearly a welcome change as compared to the traditional DVD disk which comes in either 32- or 64-bit version and which can also scratch heavily and stop working as more time passes by.
But there's no doubt that this new decision comes in handy to those whose laptops and tablets do not have an optical drive, so installing Windows 10 on these devices was pretty impossible, especially if no Internet connection was available.
