Here's a thought
Just give Win 10 for free to anyone who wants it, gets rid of all confusion :)
Lets leave keys and licenses out of the equation for the time being.
This will be an upgrade version of Windows 10, not a licensed version.
If you're an insider and you are running an activated version of Windows 10 Insider Preview, it's already detected the W7/8 marker in the firmware, and you're good to go.
And, you'll not be forced to upgrade.
Why? For Windows 8.1, they did give out a free Preview version of the OS and it did indeed expire. The only difference is that under the continuous updating process, you'll have a few months of using a later build (or builds) before it expires.
I'm not saying that's what *will* happen, but it is certainly what the revised wording suggests to me.
I'm running an activated version of preview with no marker in the firmware. The laptop started life with Windows XP, I since upgraded to Windows 8, then 8.1, but I clean-installed 10 Preview.
I do have a valid Windows 8 (and therefore 8.1) licence key for it, so I'm legally OK to use Windows 10, but the software has no way of knowing that unless it asks me to type the key in at some point.

And Windows 10 will be activated for Insiders on July 29th. Attachment 22115
