Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14986 for PC Insider

As far as I can recollect there have been more than fifty W10 insider releases.
I have never had to resort to making an ESD/ISO.....have three other computers if needed

Each upgrade has installed seamlessly......never getting problems like so many others have reported.

First thing after each update I set up and do a system restore, then do a disk clean to rid the previous flight in case of clashing, then I do a second system restore.....My security.

What I have never done on an Insider flight is alter the directory....(I realise some like to play)....which is probably why all updates have installed without problems.....that is, apart from M$ bugs, but then this is why I am an insider to try help sort them out.

Sure but even if it's not hard to do it would still involve the ADK running in a VM I guess.
BTW, there an IP ADK available too.
No idea what Kari's using...

O, any of you guys that caught the ESD file by using the registry hack received that error message ? I doubt it.
MS is just playing scarecrow, me thinks.

Yeah, I know about both ADKs. I am going to try both of them.

The error is not related to the registry hacks at all. They are simply trying to cover their bases.

I do move my folders. I also relocate the \Users tree. And I test a lot of other software on the IP to make sure what is compatible and what is not.

The reason for making .ISOs is not just for the sake of having a backup - it is for when we do things like test a new anti-malware program that fails in its protection scheme and forces us to start all over. E.g. Ransomware is growing quickly, and without a good working solution, you can get hosed pretty quickly. System restore doesn't work always in those types of situations. And clean installing AU and then waiting for IP updates is a painstakingly slow process at times - in such a situation, it is much easier to clean install the build you're currently on and go from there.

Optimally, I should be making daily full system backups that I can easily restore - but I don't, partially because I rarely have the need for that drastic of a step, partially because I like to clean install Windows every ~6 months or so, and partially because I do have the ability to make the .ISO file and install fresh from it on a whim.

If I were just testing the IP builds and not using them as a daily driver (on two very different machines) to test other software, your approach might be well and good. But I am, so it's not, for me at least.

No, I use KeePass to maintain my PWs, so since I am (usually) able to copy and paste from the KP interface, I let them be much longer and harder to crack. This was well before the time that I read about how 4 readable word PWs were effectively as strong as 20 character gibberish. But changing well over 200 PWs to a new system is not something I want to do, so I stick to the 20-24 character generated PWs from KP.

But I cannot copy from the host and paste to the VM, for some odd reason. None of the 3. All options to enable this are enabled in each VM and the the Hyper-V settings, but it still won't allow me to do it. So, I've managed to memorize two of those 20 character long PWs.

But it is still a major PITA to enter them every time.

But neither VM allows me to use a PIN. I did not know that was a limiting factor of VMs. Because it is a major PITA to have to enter my generated 20 character password every time to log into the VMs....

Are you using Hyper-V?
Try turning off Enhanced Session Mode(if you can live without sound, and drag & Drop between host and VM, and all the other goodies it offers(just like when using a Linux distro))...

Will try. I had read that those needed to be enabled for clipboard copy and paste.

That's the same as drag & drop. You can use Network in file explorer instead to move files around, and I believe you can also set Groove & Photos to read from Network position if you wish to share files there, just give permission in file explorer when it ask to make this pc visible for others on this network.

Yup.

I tried with the Product keys as well, but I figured those were not doable because I was in the installation process, and I have found where items running with elevated privileges sometimes won't allow copy and paste from other items taht are not running at the same level of elevated privilege.

but this is when I am logging in, and that should not play a part.

Heh. Guess I should uses RDC instead. It will save username and PW.
