RE: the tip at end of this post: Insider Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14986 for PC - Page 27 - Windows 10 Forums

    Hadn't noticed this earlier:

I had EnableUUPScan and SupportsUUP in registry on one machine set to 0 to receive ESD upgrade instead of UUP before I upgraded it from 14971 to 14986. Got 14986 ESD, everything as I wanted.

Checking the registry now those values were reset by upgrade to default 1 (UUP instead of ESD). Had to manually change them back to 0 to get ESD of the next build, too.

Having slight problems with updates "Could not update, try again later". WD definitions update only manually thru WD.

By "unzipped", I guess you are referring to 7-Zip unarchiving and expanding the Professional_en-gb.esd file to give this view in the 7-Zip file manager - is this what you mean? :

    Attachment 113390

The 3 indexed images, according to the XML metadata, are 1: Setup, 2: WinRE, and 3: Windows 10 Insider Preview (Build14986.1000).

Presumably there are other xml files which allow the Windows UUP update processing program to create the full Install.esd from the mass of ESD and CAB files in the Download folder, some of which are seen here:

I really like how things are coming together with Windows 10!

To prepare for a new video for a recent tut, I needed a 14971 vm which has UUP upgrade but is not yet upgraded to 14986. I thought it's best to just clean install Windows 10 PRO Build 14971, activate it, opt in for Fast Ring and wait until it gets the upgrade. Was prepared to wait a few days as has been quite normal.

The vm was created and clean install of 14971 started today at 12:10 my time, according to Hyper-V Manager. It's 13:50 my time now (for people with time disability that's 1:50 PM), less than two hours since I started the installation, build 14986 upgrade is downloading already.

    Nice!

Could this Service be related to the additional UWP Defender App?

I've finally got this release working in VirtualBox without continual BSODS. The problem appears to be with the display driver. This is the workaround for any others in this situation.

    1. Boot into safe mode.
    2. Uninstall the VirtualBox Guest Additions from the control panel programs and features.
    3. Shut the VM down.
    4. Navigate to the VM definition files and edit the .vbox file in a text editor. I use Notepad++
    5. Locate the <ExtraData> section
    6. Add a line like this
    <ExtraDataItem name="CustomVideoMode1" value="1366x768x32"/>

The values specified should be your monitor resolution width x height x bit depth

    7. Boot in full screen mode. This will probably come up in a 4:3 aspect ratio
    8. Right click the desktop and select Display Settings.
    9. Select Advanced Display Settings and then your desired resolution from the dropdown.

Future boots will come up in this display mode. Obviously you have lost the advantages of Guest Additions but it is very usable in full screen mode.
Odd. No issues like that in Hyper-V at all, and I am not enabling the RemoteFX3D Video Adapter either.

Assuming you're using hte latest version of VBox?

Nice. The last two VMs I created prior to wiping everything the update was found immediately after switching to Fast ring, and I was installing within 30-45 minutes.

Depends - did you actually enable the UWP from Windows Features?

Yeah, I tried to add my printer and it hung on trying ot update the printer definitions again. Time for a report.

    EDIT: Added the following

OK, so for Ss&Gs, I tried again - and it worked today. Sigh. SMDH. No idea why it was not working in the past, but today it finally went through.

Yes, the latest version of VBox. The problem has been raised on it's forum. Vbox's display driver has been a weak point ever since W8 where they took an age to get it working at all. The technique I described to get around the problem is from that era.

Yup, that was why I asked. I remember doing something very similar when I was playing around with running Win8 in Vbox on a Win7 host, so I had to ask.

    Update:
Hey #WindowsInsiders: still looking at our internal selfhost data to decide which build, so no new builds will be released today.
