And I thought there was too much confusion in posts here and other such forums between 2 distinct versions, now there's a 3rd which I've never been offered or received any communication from Microsoft about.

Drat my WU download is apparently hanging at 90% complete. Time to go grab the manual download and try again... the x64 cab file is not self-installing ... goes off to find cab installer ... sheesh ... I guess I'll try WUMT next. It's always something!

PS: WUMT managed both the download and the installation, though the install took a fair while (3-4 mins). Go figure!

It's been around for a long time. There are still only 2 versions. Version 1 is the RTM AU (14393.447) that is out to the general public. Version 2 is the 149xx.xxx version which is Insider. The Insider version is broken down into 3 rings. Ring 1 is Release Preview, which follows the RTM numbering series 14393, but gets the cumulative updates for testing prior to general release. Ring 2 is the Slow ring which follows the 149xx numbering series. It is released after a Fast ring is considered stable enough. Ring 3 is the Fast ring following the numbering series 149xx. It contains the latest Beta test release to the Insider Program. So, yes, you could think of it as 4 versions, but it's really only 2.

When you first join the Insider Program, you are set up on Release Preview by default. You have the choice to remain there, or change to Slow or Fast. If you change to Slow or Fast, the option of Release Preview is not offered any longer. That is because you have switched from 14393.xxx to 149xx.xxx.

I happened to find this article on a yahoo search...if what it says is accurate, it gives the impression that even though my friend isn't running windows at all (on the inherited mac he just got) and even though it's long after the free upgrade deadline, that if he joined the Windows Insider Program, that as long as he stays in it, he could actually have a legit copy of windows 10 for free....assuming this is accurate of course...

That may be the issue, I was on the Technical Preview for quite awhile before getting put on the Insider Preview Fast Ring.

For a while, you had 3 choices: Fast, Slow or Release Preview.

That's how I remember it too. But I'm one of the first Insiders.

1 machine is on Insider-Slow; the other 5 are off Insider. Those will be one of the first to get the msu file, which is also downloadable from the Update Catalog.

4th choice I was referring to was to stay on RTM....not be an Insider at all. 1 public choice, 3 "Insider" choices.

    64-bit Windows 10 Pro build 17040

    Update: December 2nd 2016

Wallet tap to pay capabilities have been disabled due to a bug in OS build 14393.479. Tap to pay will be fixed in the next Release Preview OS flight. You will need to re-add any credit cards that have been deleted.

We are sorry for any inconvenience this has caused and hope that you will continue to use Wallet for tap to pay.

No more Windows 10 keys for Insiders; post-RTM installs must be on previously activated PCs
