Last week, Microsoft announced that on July 7 it would retire the current "Modern" Skype app made for Windows 8 and 8.1 in favor of the current desktop client. Now a new report offers more information on how Skype will be offered inside Windows 10, with Microsoft confirming there are no plans to release a universal Skype app for the OS.

That seems strange, since they'll need a Universal app to have Skype on Windows Mobile 10 for non-intel processors. Unless they're planning to release a desktop version for all the different processor platforms.

I thought the modern UI was the way forward (it is for developers but not for MS) ?

I just saw it, Paul, and decided to look before I leapt. :)

Very strange, but I am quite happy with the change; reason being that no matter what I do, when I try to join a Skype meeting with my Skype for Business, the stupid web app wants to get in my way. Hopefully, this will stop that.

Just for more clarification if we need it, here's the ZDNet writeup by Mary Jo Foley:

Microsoft shocked a number of developers and customers with its announcement last week that it would be putting its Skype eggs in the Desktop App basket.

And Microsoft's June 11 Blog Post:

At Skype we want to help you do more together with the people you care about by delivering the best possible experiences to the devices you use. That’s why we’re simplifying your PC experience down to one app that you can use either with your mouse and keyboard or with touch. Starting on July 7, we’re updating PC users of the Windows modern application to the Windows desktop application, and retiring the modern application.

I guess not . . . although they have never had me convinced that was the way to go. I like to be mistress of my own computing destiny . . . even if it may not turn out the way I expected.

My only thoughts on this is

How will it work on phones, they will now need to do something separate for phones, or are win32 programmes that go in the store compatible somehow??, don't think so but could be wrong

could this give the wrong impression to other developers, if they want others to convert/create universal apps, then MS should at least be doing this themselves

The key word there is "PC Users". I am guessing the Universal app (or a new version) will be available for phones and tablets.

Guess I'll try setting it up on my tablet. Not gonna use it on my phone.

I see. This got me a little more excited to be honest, I want to see what are they hiding for us :)
I'm thinking about this new messaging since the announcement of W10 for mobile.
