The only ad I get and can't get rid of is this, EVERY SINGLE TIME I open Cortana:

I don't own a smart phone, and hopefully, never will.
I have, everything to do with ads, turned off, and do not get any others.
    Cortana tips are off too.
    I know what I'm doing(usually anyhow)
I have even started a thread about it in Feedback Hub: Error - Windows Insider Program

As for cortana being on a smartphone, this is why I love android! I have her on my PC but she's never given an ad, like intentionally that is. I mean I'd open her for like reminders or weather/traffic things of that nature but never any ads or spam suggestions at all. Must be at random.

Cortana lists my Moto X Play as incompatible.

That being said, I don't remember getting any ads...

I had to work hard to get my W7 to upgrade to W8, just wouldn't even offer it. Finally downloaded it when it was released but in the mean time I was testing W8 since alpha as dual boot with 7. Then came W10 and not even then it was offered to me. Installed W7 again and it offered it to upgrade to 10 but wouldn't go thru. Brought back my W8 (at that time already 8.1 and upgraded to 10 manually. Ever since then it's been running almost trouble free with every single insider version.
Apart from some APPs that are add supported, I haven't got a single add.
My Lumia 640ds is not getting any either but it's not on internet all the time, just turn on WiFi when needed or jump on internet over second SIM which is 3G.

I am sick of ads, which I skip as fast as I can. One of the main culprits on my pc is a local newspaper. They give you a link to a story which I want to do an online comment on, and it goes to a video ad, followed by streams of ads interlaced with the text. By the time I find the story, I've forgotten what I wanted to say anyway, so close it. I can tolerate inobtrusive ads, but surely Microsoft makes enough money from sales and support. They don't need to bombard us with even more ads. I just wish someone somewhere would make a viable alternative to windows, inject some competition into the one sided market.

Microsoft supported Windows XP from August 2001 to April 2014. 13 years. Windows 7 is scheduled from July 2009 to January 2020 - 11 years. So, just curious... how long is Microsoft supposed to keep supporting an OS before it is not considered "left out in the cold"? 20 years? 50 years?
I think the implication was that Microsoft would not officially abandon MSW7, but would push it to such a low priority they might as well have abandoned it.

I use W10 in pretty much the same way as I did with Vista, W7 and latterly W8.1 (which was effectively killed by MS with all the W10 update stuff) and now W10 Pro. Apart from having the news, money and weather tiles pinned to the start menu (the only so called apps I use) I am never aware of any ads whatsoever apart from being nagged to try Office which appears as a notification every so often.

What I'm getting at is that W10 used purely as an old fashioned operating system like W7 etc is just fine in my experience. Ads... what ads ?

As to how long will/would/should MS support W10, well I think the answer to that will be in ever changing and improving technology. To make use of what is undoubtedly around the corner will require something as far removed as W10 is from Windows 98. So in my opinion W10 will not run for very long before something new is on the horizon.

@Mooly, uninstall the Get Office app, and they will go away.
