That is precisely correct. Many times, not always, but many times they do release the ISO when the build goes to Slow Ring. As in 14965.

Agree with the upgrade thing. We Insiders, are, in reality, testing for the multi millions that will expect to get a perfect upgrade result later.
I've only clean installed once, and that was only to clear out win7, win8, win8.1 detritus!
Besides, I am too lazy to do it any other way!
There's only been a couple of times I used the install.esd to do a clean install. I feel that by testing upgrade installs instead of clean installs I am doing my part to help MS make upgrades as painless as possible when they release builds to the general public.
Getting the ESD file and creating install media is not only for clean install. It's main purpose is of course to be there in case something happens; it allows repair install, and if nothing else helps the clean install.
You don't use life belt on a boat only if you are sure you will wreck the boat, or seatbelt in a car only when you are sure you will have an accident. In the same way not creating Windows install media because you don't plan to clean install is in my opinion not very clever.
As it has lately been here, I feel it necessary to add this: The above is my personal opinion. It is not meant to be taken as a recommendation, not even a suggestion; each user may of course do as he / she prefers. This post is not personally targeting one or more fellow members. The intention of this post is not to downplay any other posts from any other members, nor am I trying to imply that I know this better than some other users. I am simply stating my honest opinion fully accepting that your opinion might be totally different.

I had to use ISO couple of times to manually upgrade because normal way didn't work and returned me to previous version. Except couple of time when I did test clean install but returned back by MR.
I upgraded from the first Creator Build 14959. The upgrade to 14971, skipping 14965 was very smooth. So perhaps this is what I need to do if the upgrades next week fail. A little more direction from Richmond would be appreciated. Hope everybody had a happy Thanksgivings - unfortunately I'm very sick (no from the food) and may need to go to the hospitial - I hope not. I'lll hold off on dual booting until then
