Cumulative Update KB3200970 Windows 10 version 1607 build 14393.447

downloaded and installed on desktop so far no problems

Just wanted to report,... and for what it's worth,...

Installed updates, and just finished a few minutes ago. Results, two machines working well, but not without errors in reliability monitor.

On my Dell Inspiron 5558 laptop , this now shows in reliability history:


1. " Use profile service stopped working"

2. "Windows---- "Windows was not properly shut down"

I let windows do it's thing, and didn't reboot or shut down during the update process.

On my Acer 703g uw51 desktop, the following critical events:

1. Windows hardware event

2. Microsoft edge quit working

I have no idea why Edge quit working. Edge wasn't open. When I turned on the computer, I checked for updates, and let it run until everything completed.


The above, are the two critical events that occurred, on two different machines, during the process of microsoft updates today. prior to the updates today, reliability monitor showed no critical events.


Otherwise, all is running well. The updates on both computers from start to finish, took about 35 minutes.

Download and install went smoothly, but there's 3.99TB reported in Disk Clean Up (again)...

It's not exactly a bug, there really are 3.99TB of ntfs directory entries to clean up (or more, 3.99TB is probably just the highest number it can count up to). The fact that 99.9% of them are hard links that don't actually occupy additional physical disk space makes little difference, Disk Cleanup still has to delete them, hard links and all - and boy does it take its time doing it, over an hour for me this time round.

The real bug is why some cumulative updates produce an excessive number of hard links in the first place.

I see these sorts of events from time to time too. And like you when something wasn't even in use. I'll go days without anything in here and then gluts of periods with bizarre entries such as the hardware one. All the time Windows works absolutely fine. I think it's just part of the fun Windows 10 gives us!

All installed OK but only after a fight...

I've noticed this before (UK) that if W10 launches into an update check in the evening and a large update such as this is present, then it more often than not stalls. Last night left me with a flashing update screen and Defender 'stuck' on installing an update. This second update check of the day happens if I leave the PC unattended for a while.

In the end I rolled back to yesterday mornings Macrium image and as I was using the PC last night only Defender ran a new check. No cumulative appeared.

This morning Windows Update grabs the cumulative and it all installs OK although it took around 10 minutes in the 'do not turn off' phase following the restart. That's a long time for a quick PC with SSD. All in all it took around 40 minutes from me forcing an update. As has become the norm, I'm currently another 1.5Gb down on the deal following this update (haven't run a cleanup yet). The AU update clean installed at the time and all my stuff installed left me with around 47Gb free. That's now 42Gb after this latest update. Accounting for say 500Mb of my own stuff that might have been added that's one heck of a lot of space used by just a few updates.

Microsoft... Please can we have a 'do not check for updates within these hours' as well as the 'Quiet hours' setting.

exact same flashing problem for me and a few others. I ended up resetting windows update via Brinks batch file from his tutorial and it got me going ok but what a shocking show from MS! I think it was luck of the draw or lack of in our cases!

Nothing yet on Windows 10 Mobile, even the 14393.351 didn`t show up . I`m starting to think that there is a problem with my phone.

I have to go back to the previous version, this update doesn't like my laptop

It certainly seems that way. Haven't updated my 32 bit version yet, lol, there are just not enough hours in the day for the time involved in all this.
