    Why?
They want to test the upgrade process, not the clean install process.
I only clean installed after RTM, and since then only upgraded since, with no problems.
In fact, I find, after reading all the posts of clean installs, I am better off that way, as my driver certificates remain unaffected since they tightened down the screws(Magician for example)
Yep, the successful upgrade performance is extremely important to them, for the obvious reasons (as most people will prefer to upgrade as opposed to clean installing and having to reinstall/rebuild their installed programs. It would become very tedious for me with > 200 games and programs installed...) If an upgrade won't work, either through the flight method or upgrading from the .iso, then I just wait wait until the next build that *does* complete the upgrade install successfully.

Thanks for your little blurb about Magician--I just checked it because of your post, and for the first time in many, many builds Magician 9.7.4 properly detects my SATA 3 AHCI setup...! Before this dating back at least 6-12 builds (!) (Well before 1607) Magician would come up and tell me that my AHCI driver was uninstalled--of course it *was installed*, else my EVO 850 would not have booted the system. Until today I had thought it was a Magician software problem--but apparently not, as it seems to be working correctly as of this build.

Now, the test will be whether it will *remain* "fixed" through subsequent reboots. I have seen it temporarily "fixed" before only to relapse the next reboot after a successful build upgrade--and that is what I expect it to do this time. Will sign off and reboot and come back and post the result...

EDIT: Ah, well...it is not to be... After the reboot Magician is again as always failing to recognize my SATA drives and AHCI settings. Nice while it lasted, though...

EDIT: It looks like a driver signature problem according to the event manager:

"The MagicianSataModeReader service failed to start due to the following error: Windows cannot verify the digital signature for this file. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source."

Yep, looks like a Magician problem or a driver problem of some kind.

Thanks for the elucidation. Like I said, I usually can't be bothered messing with it but now I know a better way I might just do it more often!
I have same situation with desktop windows.old refusing to be deleted but on my test laptop it was deleted with cleanup routine. Go figure!

    Hi,

If nothing in there is still being loaded then yes, disk cleanup will remove the lot for you.

    Cheers,

@Edwin, the only kooky thing I've noticed is the left column of tiles sometimes first displays low, down where the green arrow points. I have to drag the title line up to get it back up top. Stays there, mostly. But sometimes drops back down. Weird.....

A couple of things I've observed on this latest preview:

    1) I had to clean install the latest NVIDIA driver due to the crippled openCL.dll files both in System32 and SysWoW64 folders.
    2) When I am trying to update the Time, from the default Internet servers in the Date and Time advanced settings, I am getting an "Access Denied". It is the first time I am observing something like this.
    3) Windows Explorer is crashing, sometimes
    4) I cannot get rid of the Windows.old folder, the few Megabytes that are left in there, even though I've run Disk Cleanup and CCleaner multiple times, and rebooted, as well.
Re. item 4 - I usually boot from a live linux drive and delete the files using that.

I agree cereberus, a method I've used several times in the past.

However I found it best after deleting the Windows.ild directory in Linux to always empty the Trash directory while still in Linux. If you don't when you boot back into Windows you can be left with a Linux trash directory showing up in Windows which can't be deleted unless you reboot from the Linux DVD/USB :)
