I have just tested the offline installer on Fall Creators Update (1709) and on Anniversary Update (1607). There's a new wrinkle now, in the latest updated versions of Windows 10 you now have to run the offline installer twice before the install of Movie Maker/Photo Gallery is complete.

Install errors will be reported on both runs, but after the second run Movie Maker and Photo Gallery will appear in the Start menu and run normally.
On 17025, it installed straight away for me.

Yes, and without install errors too by the looks of it. I still haven't worked out why you seem to be the exception to the rule. Everyone else seems to get an apparently 'failed' install with 'Unknown error occurred Error Ox800c0006', both in my tests today with 1709 and 1607, and independently reported here.

It may well be, as you said earlier...

The links in the first post to the offline installer ceased to work on 21 March 2017 when Microsoft deleted the downloads from their servers.

An archived copy of Microsoft's download page and the offline installer itself have been preserved in the Internet Archive Wayback Machine. It can still be downloaded from there.

Yeah, NET Framework 3.5 is probably essential, I also have an email client and a file sharing program that won't run without it.

Thanks for the info. I don't need it for anything else, and apparently neither does Movie Maker once installed, so it looks like it's only essential for the installer. I'll bear that in mind if future updates ever stop the installer working completely, but for now it still manages to install Movie Maker despite throwing a few tantrums :)

I clean-installed the machine I used to use Movie Maker a couple of weekends ago, using a UUP-to-ISO version of 1803 (17133.1).
So I thought I'd try re-installing Movie Maker from the offline installer.

Before I even attempted that, I installed .NET 3.5 (I had to use DISM for some reason), as I expected problems there.

And I got the error 0x800c0006, which was not entirely unexpected.

But Movie Maker is there and seems to open up OK (not tried to use it yet beyond that).

This was on one install attempt too.

I know this wasn't quite the same as using the 'Official' ISO of 1803, but it suggests it would install with that too when it's released.

Incidentally it installs SQL Server 2005 Compact edition. I reckon this may be why Microsoft was quite so proactive in withdrawing the Live installer, as I suspect old SQL server versions (presumably 2005 is too old to get patches) are probably risky things as far as potential vulnerabilities are concerned,

I just tried to install Movie Maker and Photo Gallery on a new laptop from the full installation file I had archived. The installation failed with error 0x800c0006 but both programs work OK. Go figure!

Yes, that seems to be the usual experience. Each component seems to have its own separate installer which the Windows Essentials installer calls. Whatever the install error relates to happens after MovieMaker/PhotoGallery has successfully installed and does not seem to cause any problems.

The last time I tried it I received multiple errors and the program was in an unusable state.
