Finally got 946 this morning. Installation was ok, while it was waiting for me to sign in, it went in to "sleep" mode and would not come back on. After a reboot, seems to be ok now. I am still getting this on the "System/About screen", noticed most others users thet mentioned this were "On", and mine is "Off". Toggling them does not seem to do anything.
This build installed and seems to be running fine on my desktop. On my Lumia 640XL I could not get it to finish downloading. It would start downloading OK until it got close to 90%. After several tries and letting it download for hours I never got past 95%. I gave up and went back to the Slow Ring.
I was just wandering, what would happen if somebody with normal Anniversary Edition would upgrade to 14946 using ISO ?
Would it stay activated and would it join Insiders automatically ?
What would happen with updates and upgrades after that if it would go thru ?

Yes, the machines remain activated, once digitally activated it's totally irrelevant which build you install. No, they will not be automatically signed up for Insider program.
I do that with almost every new build, upgrade non-insider machines with an Insider ISO. I have three machines running EN-GB Windows 10 PRO build 14946 which have never been in Insider program. I keep a Windows 10 PRO EN-GB Hyper-V virtual machine in Insider program, make the ISO image after every new build and upgrade the three physical machines.
Two of them have been upgraded with every Insider build since version 1511, third one was clean installed on Friday with Insider build 14946 install media, all activated with digital entitlement and never been in Insider program.
Only thing to notice and remember is that when you once upgrade a general availability release, 14939 at the moment, with a later Insider build, the same build expiration dates apply than those for Insiders. At the moment it means that I have to upgrade all the mentioned three EN-GB Win 10 PRO non-insider machines currently running 14946 before this build expires, May 2nd 2017.

I don't know, that's why I asked.
A friend of mine was just here so I can download for him AE because he has very slow internet, his windows went belly up (actually HDD) and his ISO was on that HDD but second partition.

Ugh, you got the answer while I was writing. So if I was to give him my ISO of 14946 it would work but would he automatically be and insider or would he have to join insider program ? Would he continue to receive upgrades if he's not bona fide Insider ?
I could give him ISO before expiration date, I keep them all anyway.

He'd need to join IP program to take advantage of further upgrades that go beyond version 14946 but he would get updates that are common to both IP and CB versions..

LOL I saw we posted at the same time, went to add this part to my post:

Once a PC has digital license, you can for instance clean install any build you want to (starting from 10586, first one with digital entitlement). It is absolutely completely totally irrelevant if the machine is or has been an Insider machine.
Buying today a new PC from shop which comes let's say version 1511, you can upgrade it with this weeks Insider build 14946 and it remains activated non-Insider Windows. It does not automatically join Insider program, nor does it require the user to join Insider program.
Only difference is that on other non-Insider machines running an official build (version 1511 or 1607 at the moment), Windows never expires. Windows will expire on a machine which has been upgraded with an Insider build, or on which an Insider build has been clean installed, regardless if the user decides to not join Insider program and machine remains a non-Insider machine.

Why just not give your friend a copy of AE ?
Cheers ,
I gave him, actually downloaded it so he would have last one. Mine is still the first one as it came in Jully.
