Tried again Windows Update and it went good at last, not before clearing the Software Distribution folder. The installation was very slow comparing with the earlier update that had installation problems for others.

The direct download links here don't work. People have been experiencing trouble with the direct download for the last couple of days, it appears the .msu files MS has put up are damaged in some way, and they've either not noticed or can't be bothered to fix them as after 2 days they're still the same. Checking the Digital Certificate of the downloaded files shows they're invalid (ie damaged). Downloading from the Windows Update Catalog gives the same result, except the downloader actually tells you the download has failed.
Thanks, Eki! That worked! Excellent detective work. That was one of the possible changes that faintly floated in the back of my mind, but I gave up motivation to continuing investigating.
I ironically disabled the service only to prevent the Event ID errors 10 and 214 caused by the previous KB3194496, which now have been fixed as well. The update downloaded and installed much quicker compared to before, even during the shutdown process.
Should AppReadiness startup type be manual or automatic?
AppReadiness startup type default is Manual and should be left as so.
One of my friends has lost the sound of speakers in the monitor through hdmi after this update of windows. Any idea?
I had that issue, not directly after the update but a couple of boots later. Hard to say if the update was responsible. A full restart brought it back and it's been ok since. Make sure your friend is not shutting down using fast boot or hibernating the system. Try a full restart. I'm sure that's already been done but just in case
For me this build is behaving very well.
Only problem I've had was when booting from cold one morning the system hung just before the lock screen. All I had was a black screen so the only way out was to press the restart button on the case, it then booted fine and I've not had a recurrence of this since.
I'll just put it down to one of those odd things that happen occasionally. Could have been with any build.
