I have never liked the Windows Update process that delays shutdown while configuring the update, and then further delays the subsequent start-up. It smacks of lazy and arrogant programming.

It's about time that Windows Updates were background processes, totally invisible to the user, as inobtrusive, for instance, as the Google Chrome Canary update that happens to me daily, most of the time which I never actually see, and only occasionally have to perform a one-button manual update procedure which normally only takes seconds.

I agree that these long pauses with "Configuring Windows Updates 100% - please do not turn off your computer" are disconcerting, and if Windows is going to continue to release cumulative updates at random periods, or on "patch Tuesdays" which disrupt the availability of a working system, for significant periods of time, there needs to be better information prior to the update event regarding possible down-time.

The moronic cycle of update>failure>rollback>retry, rinse and repeat, is totally unacceptable.

There also needs to be more comprehensive on-screen progress reports, stating the nature of the ongoing processes, and those scheduled yet to complete, and to give an estimated time until completion of the current and all unfinished processes.

Furthermore, with these pre-event warnings, there should be a user selection of when the user is prepared to experience the down time and the update process, until Microsoft develop an update process that does not completely down the system, and merely temporarily stops and restarts the updated processes in the background.

It is time for Windows to grow up.

Yesterday all was working and Winver confirmed update....Today tried starting computer numerous times without success.
Finally managed to get a disk check, then Recovery options, neither finding faults, then option to open W10.
Tried doing a Scannow, this informed me cannot do as Windows Modules Installer was already working.
Checking in Task Manager confirmed this.....this took about half an hour to complete, after which was finally able to do a successful Scannow.

is your system now all ok after all that and booting ok. Must of been a nasty shock. Nowhere on your level of disruption but I seemed to lose sound out of nowhere yesterday evening two days after the updates. There were no errors reported in device manager and luckily a restart brought it back but goodness knows what that was all about. it seems to me Windows 10 and any update (of which they push far too many) is a roulette game!

I can only assume Windows Modules Installer was doing "unfinished business" concerning the update.
Regarding sound problems have you tried right clicking Speaker icon on Taskbar where there are various solutions on offer.

Up-dates are like rolling the dice, never know what is coming up but hoping your numbers do.

Two Days before a 9 days holiday I had a notification that there were Windows 10 updates for my computer,I let them run and when completely finished (I use the search for up dates after every patch Tuesday to make sure they are no more)I shut down and retired for the night to watch some TV,the following morning booted the thing up Lock screen would not progress further than that other than a slight change of screen contrast, used various ways of trying to get the thing to work from F 8 key to reboot from system restore to recovery disc which it did not reckonise the final solution was to use my laptop to down load a iso disc and do a complete new install which thankfully worked got the basics up and running then left it to go on holiday, returned and spent the next two days reloading my programmes manually as the new build did not even reckonise my back up drive from the older version,I expect to have the occasional set back from updates but this takes it to a newer level of frustration, thankfully every thing is running a okay but I dread the next patch Tuesday or any other Microsh*te update in between

Bluetooth has proved to be unreliable with this latest update, this has affected two different Bluetooth mice and also Logitech speakers.
