That or something like that was my idea too. Just an OS with minimal interface and no applets or programlets or wachamacallts past what's needed to run system. Windows like that would be cheaper too because they appear free to us but somebody had to be payed to develop them or MS would have to pay royalties to somebody else as they do now. I must admit that in past I used to replace them regularly but later on I either got used to them or they got better. Most I use are calculator, paint and notepad or word pad as poor man's Word. Sticky notes and Snipping tools are something I used 3rd party for but now they are pretty good and usable.

I didn't mean that "Windows Lite" should be free. It could be cheaper, though I would actually pay more for it.

MSPaint is a toy compared to some of the better, faster, lighter, free paint programs. I much prefer MetaPad to NotePad, FocurWriter or Atlantis free to WordPad, and PhoptFiltre, SmoothDraw, or ArtWeaver to MSPaint, and Maxthon or Vivaldi to Explorer or Edge, and Media Player Classic to Windows Media Player. Windows should forever stop changing associations without one's permission!

I check out the preview of the new paint and.. I didn't really like it all that much. Overall I would rather keep the old paint and have an option to use the new one if I want to. For most of my graphic work I use either Paint.net or Gimp. Both are really solid tools and free.

    Can't beet free.
I'm with you on that BunnyJ.
I've been using paint.net for the last six years and can't really see the new Windows Paint replacing that on my PC :)

I can think of 3 or 4 FREE paint programs better than MSPaint. In fact, I can think of free apps to replace all of the Windows applets.

Maybe there should be a "Windows Lite" version that has just the OS, and a premium Windows that has all the bloat your heart desires.
So you want something like Windows server nano that offers only kernel with some functionality. Everything else can be installed.
That would be pain for most people want to view/edit that small text file on that PC over there go find, download, install Notepad++ or something else. Want to crop that screenshot you took of your desktop good go to internet search, download install that pain.net etc.. want to copy that file well first go find and install that total commander or something else or do it in cmd :)
on your PC that you configured and setup the way you want it may be ok but there is lots of pc out there that you may need to perform basic actions and not all users want to go to net search risking malware sites, download wasting traffic, and install wasting more time that that task needs probably most users even cant do that..

Default Linux distributions for desktop install way more additional software than any version of windows.
if you're feeling that advanced get server version :)
and then even most server linux installs have vi/pico etc.. thats basically notepad in terminal :)

Thanks for the update, Shame it's insider only. Unfortunately I don't go in for insider stuff so will wait it out. Hope it's not too long before a public release

No worries. It'll be available in the Windows 10 Creators Update in early 2017 for non-Insiders. :)

Sounds very interesting, although I am very used to the old interface. Might have a combination of the two .
