Didn't work...failed at 75%
I had one laptop the showed a setup failed message. I don't know when in the update process it failed as I wasn't watching it at the time. I was updating 3 PC's all at the same time and just going from one to the other. I just ran it a second time and it updated.

No man, no key was asked. It just started updating and once I got to desktop windows was activated.
I wonder if it's now safe to delete "windows old" directory 17GB
One idea is to rename the Windows.old folder to Windows.personal as one blog writer sees it in order to have a place to store personal data. That's if you are running a single drive system of course and not using an external HD or removeable media regularly to back things up.
At least you having better results having seen 10 install I can add. After trying to upgrade when starting things while booted in Windows the first restart and just after passing the new startup screen with the solid Windows logo brought me to a black screen that simply hung there until I hit the reset. The second attempt booting live from the flash drive could be the indication the MS tool either didn't fully write the 10 files to the flash drive correctly or something else is the cause for....
We couldn't install Windows 10 so we set your system back to the way it was.

The installation failed in the Safe_OS mode with and error during the Boot Camp operation
Using another program that writes ISO images as well as creating disk images I made up a second flash drive in order to see if the tool was at fault.

Used same method on a Windows Tablet. . .worked perfectly along with no fault activation. . .

I did the media creation tool from the link alpha posted, installed Win 10 on a thumb drive and updated my laptop. Very easy and painless. Windows activated and never asked for PID. BTW the OS looks and runs great thus far.

I'm looking at a VHD for the 10 custom install since it won't upgrade or clean install by way of flash drive, dvd, or online inplace upgrade where everything downloads for the procedure. Once all the setup files are copied and the initial system restart takes place despite which method has been tried it gets past the startup logo setup screen and then hangs on a blank! Didn't try it on the original host drive while I did on both clone and once the second HD was wiped entirely(overdue anyways for clean 7 install) I put on a nice clean registry clutter free copy of 7 and ........
The Windows 10 installation "FAILS BIG TIME ONCE AGAIN"!!! And with the clean install there wasn't anything hardly on except what the 7 updater found immediately for drivers besides SP1. No system protections or firewall active as the 7 firewall was turned off before the next few failed attempts were tried. Something unknown is simply preventing a working install which is quite rare since there isn't any drive encryptions or anything else of that nature to interfere.

That's weird. Perhaps a compatibility issue - hardware/software? Also, have to ask, but is the OS genuine?

Same one I used on my SP3 and non-specific Windows Tablet (cheap walmart tablet). . .:)

I think a clean install activated immediately and seeing SP1 and all other updates go on qualifies the fresh 7 install I ended up seeing that followed cloning the genuine copy of 7 on the host drive to the second OS drive does answer that one rather quickly.
Some type of capatibility issue(s) should have been indicated previously but instead you see "Ready to Go" to that extent when having opened the W10 app.
As for that article I had already saw the post earlier and gave that a try to the same end. NADA! Just tried it again now that I am back on the host drive I replugged in and you end up seeing ....
