I am not sure if Windows VLC will play dvd in windows 8, 8.1 or 10. VLC might require a certain file to play DVDS within windows.
Ah, just realised that I may well have misinterpreted the problem being asked about. I was thinking of movie files but Emma may have meant playing DVDs as you did.
Illustrates that a problem should be explained in detail!
Just tried VLC - it does play DVDs. But thought I saw somewhere that MS is providing a DVD player as part compensation for removing WMC.
Just tried Kodi. It plays DVDs fine. Like this Kodi A LOT!
DVD playback. “Watching DVDs requires separate playback software,” Microsoft notes. But I assume any existing DVD playback software will continue running. And in a separate FAQ, Microsoft says it is “providing a free DVD playback app in Windows 10 for Windows Media Center users.”

As far as W 8 not playing movies, it will play reg DVDs, not Blu Ray. When I got home from my trip, I couldn't figure it out. I thought I had used it before so I check with a reg DVD and it played. I only took my fantasy movies with me and they were BR. Sorry I did not know of any way to explain it.
Wynona, will it do that on my W 8 upgraded to W8.1 since I use a W 7 to most of my posting in here. I will watch for it on both computers. Will I need any past windows updates to upgrade to W 10.
Thanks for the help.
