In most cases the preview would be installed clean not simply having replaced a working previous version like 7 on a machine but installed to a separate partition or drive if not on a VM. Here I tried it on both VM Players I had onhand as well as downloading the latest plus VBox and one other VM program but still never got to the physical drive install.

I wouldn't expect any auto update on a VM to start with while the Windows icon appeared on the task bar in June for reserving the free copy. Most likely a clean install of 7 to proceed that to be upgraded over will need to take place since I won't be allowing 10 to replace the 7 host install. The present copy of 7 on the host drive is now 2yrs, old having put that on in mid June 2013 replacing the image restored copy of the 2010 7 install on this build which had replaced that older build I beta tested 7 on which previously ran Vista. Kind of a chain gang effect.

    Win 8.1 Win10 in Vmware

I have Windows 10 pro Build 10240 32 bit in vmware player which is activated. (64 bit will not work in the vm with my processor). I am running Windows 8.1 64 Bit in my main computer. I have reserved Windows 10 for that computer. After July 29th can I get both Windows 10 Preview versions in my vm through the insider program and the reserved regular 64 bit Windows 10 for my main computer? I assume that the vm is considered another computer.

    says there:

What if I have more than one Windows device—can I upgrade them all?

Yes, you can get a free upgrade for each of your eligible Windows devices. All you need to do is make a separate reservation for each device you want to upgrade.

I have a pair of 7 desktops the main build for multi-OSing no less as well as a 7 laptop where all three can easily see 10 go on. The past I like the bestt however besides MS now providing a dvd playback app since you won't see Media Center go on 10 at all is...

Can I reinstall Windows 10 on my computer after upgrading?

Yes. Once you’ve upgraded to Windows 10 using the free upgrade offer, you will be able to reinstall, including a clean install, on the same device. You won’t need to purchase Windows 10 or go back to your prior version of Windows and upgrade again.

You’ll also be able to create your own installation media like a USB drive or DVD, and use that to upgrade your device or reinstall after you’ve upgraded.
Well let's I couldn't clone C to G accrding the Acronis TI error logs showing a drive error or two. A fresh system image wouldn't continue as well due to the same log errors. After a good run of the Disk Check tool on the host both tasks were tended to and now the upgrade nukes the clone to be followed afterwards by a nice "clean install" to the second OS drive here. That will leave the 7 host drive intact not being effected by the upgrade and subsequent clean install.

This will then be the time to find out what I have now running on 7 and possibly even the tv tuner/capture card as well as nic cards may find a way to work on 10 like they have on 7. The tuner eventually being replaced anyways even if it doesn't quit on me first like the previous by same brand there. Granted the initial concerns of course as seen with any previous version will be what device drivers will work if no newer ones are to be seen? W10 will be detecting the hardwares including the capture card that simply may be left to 7 to handle.

I reserved W10 the first day it was available to reserve and just got my reservation confirmation email today.

How long do you think those who did not take part in the Insider Program will have to wait to get the upgrade?

Yes, on or about the 29th. Did you upgrade from 8.1 to the preview?

Just a question how are you able to run Windows 8.1 64 bit and not run VMware player 64 bit. I'm running Windows 8.1 64 bit The technical Preview in the 64 bit VMplayer.

VM Player has two versions for each release being one for the 32bit Windows and the other for the 64bit as well as releases for the other OSs as well. For running any x64 OS you would first be on a x64 bit OS to begin with and have the software that supports x64 in VMs as well while the 32bit will still be emulated on the 64bit side.

The Reserve Your Free Copy should suddenly see Get Your Free Copy of 10 on the 29th once the servers are set to go! The installer they have for this as well as the online verfication tool will run to verify a legit copy of 7, 8, or 8.1 is to be upgraded. Once I have the download however I have things set already where I shut down, unplug the 7 host, and then upgrade a temp copy of 7 until the tools become available to create a installation dvd or usb install key. From there a nice clean install of 10 on the second OS drive without any nuking of the 7 host. Dual boot controlled by F12 at post time!

As for emails from MS I have a folder in Live Mail still in use created for MS News and Updates and got the same in today.

When can I upgrade to Windows 10?

We want to give every customer a great upgrade experience, so we’re rolling it out in an organized way to manage high demand and to make sure that the upgrade is right for your device. After July 29, when Windows 10 is ready for your device, it will download in the background. You’ll then get a notification to schedule your upgrade right away or at another time that’s convenient for you.

Here are some common questions about the upgrade process. Click on the links for answers.

Should you need any help or have any additional questions after upgrading, a Microsoft Answer Tech will be available to assist you.

Yes he said he is running 64 bit Windows 8.1 and It won't allow him to run 64 bit VMplayer. That is what i'm running. I do have 8.1 64 bit Pro.
