My numlock still stays off during the login screen from a coldboot. I've edited the reg key manually, didn't work and I've used Brink's reg file, didn't work. Guess I've just got an oddball keyboard.
Numlock was always on until after the AU though.
My numlock is on for the login screen, but when I get to the deaktop it's off. Is that WAD?

The easy way round the numlock problem is just to turn fast startup off.
However it takes less time to press the numlock key than the delay you get by disabling fast startup.

There's a nice writeup on this subject here How to Enable Num Lock Automatically When Your Computer Boots

Nope, I didn't figure it out. I'd like to see my password page show up ready for me to input the numbers without having to hit anything but the numbers.
Keys right above the QWERTY line on your keyboard are always ready to input numbers, numlock on or not. That's what I use for my PIN. About the only thing I ever use the keypad for is to input codes for special symbols.

I find the Registry edit on mine simply retains the setting in use when shut down, that is if the NumLock is On it will be On when rebooted/started, if Off it will be Off next time.

Anyway we'd better get back onto the KB3194496 CU.
It's starting to get way off topic

Larc, since I'm an accountant, data entry and statistical typist, I always use my keypad. I hated those number things up top when typing on a regular typewriter and the old keyboards. They're just not conducive to speed.

Saga continuation: Installation of KB3194496 CU on a 2nd PC - a very old PC. Download took a long time, but the installation seemed to go smoothly. Reboot went smoothly and quickly. But ... Shutdown option was "Save and shut down". No mention of another reboot needed, but something relating to maintenance was apparently not complete. The next boot was uneventful, but I'm now trying a restart and shutdown been stuck with a "Getting Windows ready" message for 25 minutes. Occasionally there's a flurry of disk activity, but mostly it just sits there. Something tells me that each computer's reaction to this fix is every individual. --------------------- While writing the few lines the shutdown finally completed and the restart was uneventful. Just to be save I tried another restart and it, too, went with no problem.

And now you wait to see if you're advised that the same update you just finished is again available . . .

If you didn't get an error message (failed), it has likely installed. With a command prompt, just input "winver". If Windows version is XXXX.222, you won't get a recurring available update. Or go to 'Settings' and click on Update and Security to see if one's waiting for you.

I had no trouble with the installation failing on either PC. I got there, but it was a rocky road: hangups during shutdown and restarts. Three forced power downs on one PC (because I got tired after waiting 10-15 minutes). Oh, and then there was the installation process on the 1st PC being hung for over 30 minutes at the end of the process - over 10 minutes at 96% (but I missed when it got to 96% so I don't know how long) and about 20 minutes at 99%. Luckily, both are at 222. Maybe I'll be brave enough to try it on my wife's laptop now. Or maybe not.
