    I changed my MB and most components several times with Windows 7 and 8 and had no problem installing OS. The way I see it is that I am not trying to use same OS on more than one machine. I am just improving my system. :) Any electronic component is subject to break down without notice :)
    Also MS is offering this upgrade so when I upgrade to Windows 10 then my Windows 8.1 is no longer valid after I use the key to install windows 10. One way to get rid of customers is to force them to buy a new copy of the OS each time a MB breaks lol.

    cheers

    BunnyJ do you know for a fact that if .. say ... my MB died that I would have to purchase a new copy of Windows 10? I was assuming I could just buy a new MB and install all the components I already have and then Install Windows 10 with my proper key. Even if I decided to upgrade to newer type MB and processor I thought I could do that and add all my other components. Am I wrong with this for Windows 10?
    A Retail version can be transferred from one PC to another. It can only be activated on any one PC at any one time. You can move it from one PC to another, if you remove/wipe the previous install from the other PC so that the key is no longer in use. OEM versions are tied to the PC/motherboard they are first activated on. They cannot be transferred to another PC as per the EULA. People have managed to do it though, depending on the circumstances. Motherboard died and couldn't find an exact replacement. Don't count on doing it though.

    @alphanumeric yes I understand OEM but that brings to mind of my situation. I have a retail copy of Windows 7 and when I upgraded to Windows 8, I gave up that key to Win8. Then I upgraded to Win8.1 and next I will upgrade to Win10. I am assuming I will be able to download the iso copy of Win10 for reinstalls when my system gets corrupt. Would you assume the same thing?

    Pretty much the same scenario as Scramjet...
    I have three retail copies of Windows 7 installed on my computers. If I do the free Windows 10 update on any of them does that turn them into OEM versions and therefore not available for transfer to new computers?
    If this is so, it is an important consideration when considering updating.

    Win 8 is pretty resilient on driver change so it could mix and match a lot better than windows 7. If network is working appropriate drivers are found, downloaded and installed automatically.

    Why not just not upgrade at all? And save your money? I don't get your reasoning at all?
    I was suggesting that too others who are building a new machine, buy 7 Pro you get 10 Pro for free and you can still go back to Seven if you don't like it.

    If you do the free upgrade it would be for the life of the computer. A new motherboard would be considered a new computer.

    I would assume your scenario would be the case; somewhere along the line, you would either get a new product key to Windows 10 or would use your Windows 8.1 product key to reinstall.

    Failing an ISO being available, you could probably create an ISO from the Install.esd file.

    Basically, yes. Once you upgrade to Windows 10, it seems that it will be good "for the supported life of the computer." What we don't know yet is what the "supported life of the computer" is; Microsoft may (or may not) have figured it out yet, but they haven't told us if they have or haven't.

    The bright side of the coin is that if your computer crashes and you can't fix it and have to buy a new computer, Windows 10 will almost surely be installed on it. :) Building another computer to put the existing license on probably won't be acceptable by Microsoft.

    @Wynona
    So what you are saying is that if someone should have the misfortune of losing a MB that person would have to buy a new copy of Win10 and then if in 6 months that MB is flakey and it crashes and it has to be replaced then he must buy another new copy of Win10 because it is a different MB? That is ludicrous. Nobody in their right mind would do that lol.

    I sure hope MS will clarify this because I will not be upgrading to Win10 until I know. I know I have done it with Win7 and Win8 so why would I even think about throwing away money for the same OS I already have. Not a good feeling
