If this happens later, I mean that Start has first worked and then suddenly stops working, I have found that killing the Explorer process and restarting it sometimes but not always helps. Worth to try anyway.

Hi there.
In case people have missed the fix for some audio systems (VIA HD Audio for example) a temporary solution is to LOWER the frequency to 16 bit 96000 Hz -- this won't make a huge difference to compressed mp3 sound or lowish quality computer "Bassy Boom box" type of speakers.
After Ms has fixed the issue you can regain full decent sound again but the solution posted should work. Also set the default to speakers as it gets re-set to headphones the first time you boot.
Cheers

Thanks for the help. I changed to my other MS account, deleted the faulty (MS) account, but not the data. Restarted. created the previous faulty MS account. The Start menu was working again.
I then decided to go for a reinstall, as I felt things were a little messy. Oddly, this time the installation was faster, and there were some slight differences at the endof the process. All is well - for now.
Thanks for your help. Resetting the default output solved my no sound problem.
In the past when I clicked on the sound icon in the bottom right hand corner, there was and indicator which showed how much sound was being sent to the speakers. This is no longer present. Typical of the way Microsoft have made Windows 10 worse than the previous versions.
Don't know if this helps, but I had the same problem, and it was fixed as per post by Slartybart:

Go to Settings>Personalization>Start and flip all the switches
You can get to Settings through the Action & Notification center (All Settings 'tile')
Has anyone heard Cortana for last two builds? She opens programs but no longer seems to speak!
Ditto! Ever since she was introduced to me I have looked forward to a warm, personal relationship but quite disappointed in her verbal skills. In every build, I find myself comparing how well she does residing in my Windows 8.1 phone (Nokia 635) with how poorly her progress has been on my desktop. I wish for a dynamic Cortana who can do many things: reminders, calendar events, phone calls, emails, opening programs, files, etc.
