The free Windows 10 upgrade means users won't be buying New PCs

I have an older retired desktop that once held Vista, which I upgraded to Windows 8.1. Its only problem is that it wouldn't take Windows 8.1 64 bit; I had to drop to 32 bit. I may drag that one out and see if I can put Windows 10 64 bit on it, since it was a 64 bit machine until Windows 8.1 changed specs.

I bought two of these HP desktops that originally came with Vista just before Win7 was released. Both were upgraded to Win7. My wife's machine is still running that same Home Premium version and essentially is on 24/7. My machine has been upgraded from Vista to 7 to 8.0 to 8.1.1 and also is essentially on 24/7. I am dual booting presently and both machines are networked with 3 printers.
So Wynona, drag that Vista desktop out!

Just now I had so many comments and anecdotes run through my head agreeing there, I got a brain jam now and don't know where to start.
I get "brain jam" quite frequently while working with Windows 10! :)

Did you read any of the posts in this thread? The general consensus is just the opposite to what your thinking will happen. Why would non-techies buy a new PC when most can likely upgrade to 10 for free? It's been my experience that the non-techies just run what they brung until it dies.
Come to think on it, Alpha, most likely the "non-techies" will be offered the "upgrade to Windows 10" the same way they were offered Windows 8.1 and 8.1.1 . . . if so, it will be kind of a no brainer for them to just click on "OK, gimme it!" :)

Well lets ask some that like windows 10, I am sure there are a few non-techies on Windows 10 forums.
Non techies will you upgrade to windows 10 for free or keep their current operating system on your hard drive?
Non techies will you buy a new system with windows 10 instead and keep using the current operating system on your old computer?
Non techies will you buy a windows 10 install disk?
You forgot one thing, Groze. Most of the non techies in these forums have the benefit of our knowledge; thus, will follow our lead. By the time Windows 10 is RTM.d, they'll know everything they need to know in order to make that decision. :)

I'm not in the market for a new PC at this time.
But if I was, it'd be running Win 8.1.1, not Win 10.
If it came with 10 installed, the very first thing would be to install 8.1.
I do NOT like Windows 10. I did, at first, but with every beta there was yet another thing I didn't like, and the previous dislikes were either still there or actually made more unlikeable. No, it can stay in a VM as a curiosity (it's there now, but I find I hardly use it) or on a 'second' machine, but not as my primary OS on this machine.
I'll give it 12 months, and see what 3rd-party developers come up with to improve it, then I MAY take another look at it.
My computer is NOT a phone, nor do I use it like one. So I don't want it to look OR work like one.

Thanks Wynona, it was originally a Psychedelic GIF that changed colors fast, but I decided against it, because there could be people with Epilepsy on the forums, and I do not want to be responsible if they get an attack.
I have a few friends with this problem, one is even a singer from a well known regional Heavy Metal band and he has to be careful of the light show during concerts.

I cannot see non techies buying a new computer for win 10 or even caring about having a DVD
The update if its easy I can see them doing, but then panicking when things are different and thinking the computer is broke

These days a new OS isnt the main reason for wanting a new PC any more.
Maybe your on an ancient system that cant play the shiny you game you want to play. I think games and their system requirements are the main reason why people want to upgrade to a new computer, not the OS.
