    @dalchina

    Many thanks, clearing the SoftwareDistribution folder worked but it stalled again at 48% this time, however the WU Standalone Installer worked this time to manually install the .msu file for KB3189866 and then KB890830 + KB3188128 followed as normal via Windows Updates. All sorted now at last!

    How long do folk find that this update takes during the rebooting after the update - the bit from 30% to 100%? I wanted to boot up fairly quickly, and it took over 5 minutes, which was annoying.

    It was around 5 -8 minutes on mine (8GB Ram / Core i3)

    On our 2nd laptop in this house where the updates did go smoothly the reboot took nearly 15 mins. And it has a SSD!

    If you mean the automatic maintenance scan that start itself while the PC is idle, then the Anniversary Update broke that one for me. The trick to get it working again is to go into Defender settings and turn off real-time protection. Now restart your machine. Defender will turn itself back on with all the right tweaks to let it run automatic scans again.
