Well I can confirm 8.1 Core gets you 10 Home. I just did the online upgrade from 8.1 Core to Windows 10 Home 10074. System page shows Windows 10 Home Insider Preview. Right now fbl_impressive CORE 10122 is downloading through Windows update.

Try going into Store Beta, check for updates. It worked for me.
When I go to beta store and locate "people" app and click on install, it sits for hours indicating it is working...nothing happens. Any suggestions?

In 10074 and earlier you get Home to Pro upgrade simply from Control Panel > Add Features by giving the Insider Preview product key. (Build 10074 Pro product key: 6P99N-YF42M-TPGBG-9VMJP-YKHCF.)

Seems that Add Features is removed from the Control Panel in 10122. A workaround to upgrade core 8 to 10 Pro is to get 10074 ISO from Microsoft, upgrade using it which gives you 10 Home, and use the Control Panel > Add Features trick to upgrade it to 10 Pro. This must of course be done before then upgrading 10074 to 10122.

It's been like this all the time. From 7 Home Premium and Basic and 8, you have got 10 Home.

I had 8.1 core and now I am running 10 Pro TP. Of course when it is time for the real Windows 10 I do not know exactly which version I will get. I will probably have to pay to keep the Pro version.

Given a choice, that's what I'd keep. Pro gives you a few options you don't get in Core.

That's the first time I've done the upgrade from Core. Normally I'd be running Pro or Pro + MC. I have Pro MSDN keys so why not. So far I got a couple of Visual c++ debug error pop ups on boot. II had to uninstall the ASUS EZlink utility to stop the error messages. Haven't tried my USB 3 monitor yet, not going to like it if it doesn't work. I also have the fuzzy Tiles issue. another reason why I don't like doing upgrade installs. I copied the ESD file for 10122 while I did the upgrade. I don't think I'll ever use it but I have it just in case I change my mind.

I think with these Previews you can run whatever edition just changing the Product Key.

I click change product code and the UAC prompt comes up, for an instant and disappears. If I hover my cursor over its icon on the taskbar it shows on screen but disappears again as soon as I move my cursor to click yes. I can't minimize the update and security window because of the waiting UAC prompt confirm or deny. Great. I am now locked in a no win situation. Looks like I'll have to kill it with task manager.
