This very well may be true and exactly what MS has planned . Did you hear this officially from MS?
I haven't seen anything stating otherwise? Microsoft has always charged OEM's for Windows, why would they change that now? The free upgrade is for consumers, and time limited. The OEM's will likely get a deal if they convert existing stock from Windows 8 to 10 but they will still pay some type of fee.

I'll try to find it but it was a bit ago... trust me.. there will be no subscription fee.
I wouldn't have a problem with a subscription fee as long as it was reasonably priced and only for upgrades and not updates. Right now Windows 10 is a great OS and it's still a TP. I just hope MS doesn't ruin it. And Windows 10 is not really free for one year. If it was truly free you wouldn't have to use a OS you already paid for to upgrade.

M$ is hurting from the XP thing most of those boxes do not show up on the net so they are not counted that number could be huge. M$ giving W10 away may break that cycle as W7 will be the next XP soon and that number puts the XP number to shame. Also M$ is still looking to break into the mobile market by offering a free upgrade to get the user numbers up they will get developers to port there APPs to Windows platform without that windows mobile is sunk.
I would think, aside from the free upgrade offer, there will be pay for upgrade and full versions available for those running XP or Vista, or a built it myself PC.

I keep forgetting that.. I'm sort of surprised that MS didn't come up with a way for Xp users to get a version of Win10.. the issue with hardware requirements would be a deal killer.. but a "light" version..
I think trying to get XP user to upgrade is a lost cause. They will probably continue to use XP until the day their computer goes up in a puff of smoke. :)

I've seen on NewEgg a Win10 item for sale with an email to notify when it's available. When Win10 does come on the market I might purchase a DVD copy.

I totally agree with you on this.. Many users just don't see/feel the need to upgrade the OS.

It only makes sense to cover all the bases. not everybody is going to qualify for the free upgrade. I have an MSDN subscription so getting ISO's shouldn't be an issue for me. I really really hope they do up a Media Creation Tool for Windows 10 like the one for Windows 8. That way the rest of you could easily get an ISO.

If they haven't upgraded from XP by now they likely never will.

    XP upgrade

I have an XP machine I use for support purposes.
Upgrading would be my worst nightmare, it has 6 cards in it, some of unknown manufacture.
Trying to find drivers would be an enormous task which I am far to old to contemplate.

Lots of companies have legacy hardware/software that will only run on a specific OS and or specific PC hardware. If that PC/terminal is isolated from the Internet its no big deal. To upgrade everything may be cost prohibitive, if even possible. The company I worked for had some very custom hardware and custom proprietary software. You were pretty well locked in.

On the other side of the coin are consumer PC's that are running XP just because that's what it came with. The owners just aren't going to bother updating them. When they die, a new PC will be bought to replace it and the cycle will continue.
