If you have a PC with no OS on it, or one that doesn't qualify for the free upgrade (XP, Vista) or one with a non genuine OS. You could wipe it clean and clean install the insider preview. Then upgrade to the RTM for free when it comes out.. Otherwise your going to have to pay for Windows 10. If you already have a genuine qualifying OS, then yes, not much advantage to becoming an insider. I'm not sure what insiders get, is the Preview Home or Pro, I thought it was Pro. Try opening group policy editor, only works in Pro.

It would be nice to get a Pro version, then I could finally try Hyper-V. That's about the only advantage for me between Home & Pro, other wise it won't make a difference other than to be able to say "Hey I got the Pro Version....Free!"(showing off sticking my chest out in prideAttachment 19366)

Everything I've read would seem to indicate that insiders have to upgrade from a valid license just like the general public does.

Why should we get an advantage? We've (hopefully) helped shaped the OS into what it is today, we've been testing a technical preview not waiting in line for a handout.

Ummm, the fact that we get to test Windows 10? I know there are leaks all over the place, but I know that I'm legitimately testing Windows 10 as an Insider.

And, no, I don't know if Windows 10 is "legally" available for testing anywhere other than the Insider Program, but it's my guess it's not.

Who said we should? My only point was the implication has existed that insiders get some special upgrade advantages and I haven't seen any evidence of that.

Just to confirm if I am reading this correctly

I have Win 8.1 Home at the moment so would be due to get the Home version of 10 via upgrade

However, as I am in the insider program, I could update my main machine shortly before launch of 10 to the Win 10 Pro Preview and then get the pro version for free ?
I think the following <snip> from http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/i...4-45f4b7ed2fb9 should explain things a bit better:

Will I be able to upgrade from the Windows 10 Technical Preview to the final release?

There has been some debate regarding qualification for the final release of Windows 10.

Microsoft has noted the intention is to provide a direct upgrade path from the Preview to the final release. Of course, decisions can change. Recently, the company noted that you could upgrade non genuine licenses to Windows 10, but later it was found out, that license would be non genuine.

So, to be on the safe side, its best you ensure you have a valid genuine Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 license installed in order to qualify for the final release. Company officials have noted though if you join the Windows Insider Programand upgrade from Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 to Windows 10, you will qualify for the free upgrade to the final release.

    Latest confirmation:
When asked if there would be a cut off date for Insiders before Windows 10 reached RTM, Microsoft's Gabriel Aul stated that preview builds would continue being delivered up until the final release.

"We expect to keep flighting builds to Insiders all the way up to RTM. More details to come, but no cutoff planned."

See my post just underneath yours, Cyber. Doesn't look to me as if we'll get anything more than anyone else. :)

Before Windows 8, Beta Testers who filed bugs and suggestions usually got a free copy of whatever we were testing, but not always. It varied. However, we were never told in advance that we would or would not get a copy of the product. I've received a number of "SWAG" items for innovative suggestions, very, very, very good bugs. Those who regularly filed bugs were rewarded for their dedication with "stuff".

Recently, I had a very bad problem and aired it in one of my Beta Groups. Some 75 to 100 posts later along with a very dedicated fellow Beta Tester, we finally reached a solution. I gave kudus and praise for the help and assistance I'd received from this person. Bottom line, my fellow tester was invited to a very elite Beta Group.

What I'm saying is that not all of us actually deserve special treatment for testing Windows 10. Others of us, in my opinion, should receive some special consideration for going beyond the norm. Thing is, I think the SWAG days are behind us.

BTW, I wouldn't class myself as deserving special consideration . . . I just like testing and so far haven't found anything earth shattering that someone hasn't found before me. :)

I've read that too, all depends on who you talk to it would seem. I'm not holding my breath. I have MSDN anyway so no big deal to me.
