My tip: Create system images. This way you can always revert to a former state if there is something wrong. That's what I do and updates are no-brainer to me, I can always restore the system to the state it was in before the update.

Since you haven't got a backup there are only two things that can help you: Another update or a clean install. Or wait, maybe you should try refreshing your system which would be a more modest procedure. And as soon as your system has been fixed you should start creating system images. If you don't you will sooner or later be in the exact same situation again.
