Well.. Crud. Let's hope we get a new build next week when things settle down.
Is MS starting the phase out of IE??
If so that's earlier than I thought they would start.,
So much for prognostication. I just updated a VM of Windows 10 Pro N from 1511 to the latest media creation tool version which was 14393.82. Then successfully installed Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB3176936). Now I'm really trying to find out whether my Preview Build 14901 contains patches or whatever is in this update - released yesterday. (can't get 14905 on my physical machine) Since as others have pointed out Update History contains no entries its pretty hard to see what has been applied. Just for fun I'm going to see if the new media creation tool will "reset" Insider Preview 14901. Like a presidential candidate says - "What do I have to lose?)
W10 loves to reinstall Apps that have been removed (i.e. W10 ignores user choices).
I don't bother to uninstall them as W10 will just reinstall them whenever it feels like it.
I just remove them from the Start Menu (apart from the Weather App).
W10 also loves to randomly change user modified settings.
That is assuming that it is even obeying the user's choices in the first place (W10 Home ignores my Wi-Fi settings).
You've never heard of auto-updates, telemetry, data-sharing Apps and Cortana?
There have been multiple threads on this forum with people battling over those items.
If those items had to be installed (just like plugins for browsers) most of the complaining would have been eliminated.
MS could have saved themselves a lot of grief by offering:
- Free W10 including auto-updates, full data collection, telemetry and Cortana (no user adjustments and not removable)
- Retail W10 with no auto-updates, data collection, telemetry and Cortana (free separate downloads for those who want them)
Yeah, I have to say, the lack of user control over Windows Update is infinitely frustrating, to say the least.
A known and reported bug with the new build is that it will lock some users out. You can't get past the Start Screens because there is no keyboard or mouse. You have to persevere. Eventually you can get in. If you get the bug use NETPLWIZ to disable windows login until Microsoft fixes it.
Upgrades are still deactivating (for lack of better word) printers that are not connected and on during upgrade. My HP Lj1300 is always lost from printers list. I let it find driver that is not deleted but if I tell it to keep it when it asks, it fails to print. If I let it install the default driver it works until next build.
Saw that I was hoping for another build this one is mostly OK here but it has the known issues and maybe a couple of of others they didn't publish or catch but it is a beta and that's going to happen .
I was down on my test mule - driver for ~ 4 days it fried a main board and the new Core i5 HP everyday computing spec. PC took about 3 days to get here and one day before they shipped it IOW 4 days all in all .
I had to scrape and migrate some of the data off the 6 yr. old AMD 6 core PC and some I moved to my storage array and then configure this new one and make it dual boot with 14905 and roll in 14393 to the OEM metal with what I thought was going to be the MCT .
I was lazy and used the update now button option at MS for the OEM bloatware OS I cleaned up some for now .
I had the 14905 ESD in the data I scraped out of the 6 yr old AMD 6 core box that served me well and often got used hard within its limitations .
I will repair it and figure out what to do with it ,some one will get a decent older PC. it's to good to bin and it has 8GB ram and a newer 1TB HD and aftermarket air cooler . OEM main boards for it are cheap on Pay-bay or I could put something like an AM3 Biostar in it or part it out as a last resort .
