@dencal, just a side note...

In order to use the ESD to ISO method, the conventional method (thru WU) must be done at least once on some machine or VM you have. Otherwise, there will be no INSTALL.ESD file to grab to use in the ESD to ISO method. You could, I suppose, get the INSTALL.ESD thru "other channels". MS does not publish them to the general public, only the ISOs. Risky adventure, though.

What makes the ESDtoISO method useful is when you have multiple machines, physical or VM, and for whatever reason, some are not offered the update. You get tired of waiting, so you "roll your own" ISO and do the upgrade manually. Also nice to have the ISO if you need to do repair work and MS has not released the WIM (TechBench) or ESD (MCT) format ISOs yet.

In addition to that, if having multiple physical / virtual machines running 10 you only need one of them opted in for Insider builds.

A Windows 10 PC don't have to be opted in for Insider builds to be able to use them; you can grab the ESD from an Insider machine, make an ISO and upgrade a non-Insider machine with it. Same build expiration rules apply of course, if you once start upgrading a non-Insider machine with Insider builds you have to keep upgrading it with later builds before the installed build expires.

And a lot of DISM rinses...takes a few re-boots to get all the concrete off........
