The LGP setting or the change of the DWord value from 1 to 0 are the two options to prevent the OS upgrade from happening. Since 10 is the first to see the OS upgraded by way of the WU the only other option to prevent the anniversary from showing up would be to simply disable the WU entirely which you are not looking for. That would be the only 100% insurance against the update.

The only two that best fit what you are looking for are outlined in the guide there I pointed you to. That shows how to use one or both options(I used both on Windows 7 dual boot installs to prevent the 10 upgrade during the first year) and is mainly geared for the previous versions as many were attempting to prevent 10 from upgrading over one of the previous versions not 10 itself during the year long free upgrade offer. The Option One if you will note is an MS download for Windows 7 to effect the same change as you would make in settings in the Local Group Policy there.

What I will do here now however since you still tend to get confused about how things with 10 now work is see if I can get the guide's author to post a better answer for you since he has a bit more experience with the Enterprise edition in particular as well as being what many consider at the expert level.

Have you tried the "Show or hide updates" troubleshooter at http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...owhide.diagcab

I have changed the Ethernet DWORD to 2, so downloads will not take place automatically.

That would equal to old let me check first option seen with 7, 8, 8.1 while 10 is now mostly focused on seeing everything come by WU and has severely limited the options. What MS has been focused on is seeing all updated builds go on smoother by way of the WU and has removed the former options of checking yourself before download and otherwise left with the last resort option of disabling the WU by the Deferupgrade check box option which ignores the regular security updates while blocking all new features which are generally what you see in the next updated build anyways but not prevent the next build(update or Insider Preview) from arriving.

If you are concerned about losing apps you have installed the transitions experienced here between numerous Insider builds up until the 1st Anniversary Update arrived went smoothly for the most part with the few registry tweak exception for hiding unwanted folders from view in Explorer, sound card software needing a reinstall each time while every other program remained intact. In fact once the update was available I immediately updated the 10 laptop and two 8.1 to 10 models to the anniversary build since the other two were just catching the free upgrade at the last minute back then followed by the update in about a week's time to come.

The How To guide explains how to simply edit the registry to change the Ethernet setting to metered connection which is something generally tended to when the proxy is first being detected during the Windows setup. Many are on metered connections which won't prevent updated builds like the 1st from showing up however but simply gear the download to a slower pace. What poop1711 is looking for is how to disable the OS Upgrade function to prevent the update from being downloaded and installed which has been pointed to in the Ten F guide pointed to earlier.

Sorry for my poor English. Do you mean metered connections cannot prevent Windows Update from automatically downloading and installing a new version of Windows 10?

Yes I agree with you. A metered connection should NOT allow the update to proceed unless you specifically allow it to proceed? Or have I misunderstood something?

I do not use WIN 10 Home and I recommend to all that I help with WIN 10 not to use win 10 home but rather go for WIN 10 pro, because of the added benefits regarding being able to set certain things such as how updates are handled using LGP.

As a Home Edition user, I use the following instead of LGP to handle updates.

Thank you for the reference. and the link to a vbs file.

The link was to a site in Chinese, which I then used the translate App to translate into English.

I came across this interesting translation:

Instead of Regedit to go metered, but Windows just want people not updating, but home to less-who knows the system can touch Regedit Amy Jones Lang LaSalle in a wok.

Regedit instead wild so long and slowly peeled first.
I now need someone to translate the quote into something I am able to understand!

It loses something in the translation doesn't it?!

Using a Visual script is not for everyone however as well as there not only being a few differences seen between the differing editions but localities as well. Besides the language differences there are at times some other things different depending on location.

Now as for metered connections that doesn't prevent but can often hamper updates due to the slower as well as limited nature of that type of web access. MS already took into account slower, limited connection speeds and access when you first go to set 10 up. Most will still prefer to download the iso form of any update they are after however to keep it onhand as well as not wait for the slow upgrade by WU process.

I am Chinese. The VBScript was originally downloaded from this page and subsequently modified by me to serve my own needs. Please tell me the number of the post you are referring to. I will try to translate it as long as it is not long.

My connection is metered, so Windows will not automatically check for updates, and thus no updates will be downloaded and installed automatically.

Well it's good that you confirmed just what is seen with metered connections since I have never been on one and a bit lacking in experience there. Doesn't check for any updates at all but isn't what poop1711 would be looking for however.

He is trying to isolate the RS1 update from all other regular WU downloads to prevent the build from being downloaded and installed where the LGP setting as well as registry value change together will easily prevent that from happening have a lock put in place from two different directions. Changing over to the metered connections setting would require resetting his initial network detection which could prove pointless if he suddenly found that wouldn't play well with the present ISP situation he is in. Not knowing just what type of set up he has at his end I can still only recommend the options found in the guide as the best router to take with putting both in effect being an added insurance policy.
