I have downloaded an ISO of 1607 to upgrade the W10 on a pc situated where the broadband is very slow. The W10 is a recent clean install using the W7 product key and is up to date with everything prior to 1607. Can you confirm that I can use the ISO to update rather than clean install?

You shouldn't have any activation issues at all since 10 has already been activated on that machine. With the iso downloaded you can now choose between the upgrade to update or see another clean install take place. For an immediate upgrade to update mounting the iso on a virtual optical drive has seen several successful updates take place here on various machines all but one having previously seen upgrades from one or another edition of W7 to W10.

After reading about the risk to lose access to partitions after the update i prefer to wait until they fix the issue.

This is a super bug. Too risky for me to lose all my data that are on partition d

I wonder if a definite fault will be found and patched?

If D: is a separate drive you could just pull its power for the update. That way you will have control as an auto update could catch you by surprise.

I have four internal as well as a fifth external along with a 7 port usb hub and not once have seen any problems accessing anything following upgrades from build to build or now with the latest update as well as with the Threshold 2 update last November.

When in doubt the Disk Management seems to always find a way to rescan things as well as mount existing volumes when right clicking to select the change drive letter option. Once you select a letter suddenly there's that new flashing explorer window for the newly found volume. What you are then seeing is an existing partition or drive being re-initialized so Windows can mount the volume as a new logical drive. Going from one build to a newer one doesn't prevent any of that.

My drive showed as RAW. You can't give a drive letter to a non partitioned, not formatted drive. This the first and only time this has ever happened to me on an upgrade or clean install. And I've been using PC's since DOS. It went MIA on the upgrade. No such issue on a clean install though.

Someone else here reported the same thing. Not really an acceptable outcome. Wonder what on earth is happening and why just a very few drives are affected?

Glad my D: drive is still a D: drive!

Alpha, can Mini Tool Wizard see the files on it? I had an ext HDD here a while ago that couldn't have a letter assigned but MTW rt click/Explore showed all the folders/files. Enabled me to copy files from the volume.

I had it all backed up to an external. I just partitioned, formatted, and copied my files back. My laptop with dual SSD's was fine with the upgrade. As always, with Windows, YMMV, lol.
