You can look in the hidden files(check hidden file in file explorer) at C:\Windows\Panther. The setup logs for the upgrade will be there. More info: Windows Setup Log Files and Event Logs

Additional to above, you may find the panther log in the hidden ~BT folder.

    $windows.~bt\Sources\Panther
Log location before Setup can access the drive.
    $windows.~bt\Sources\Rollback
Log location when Setup rolls back in the event of a fatal error.
    %WINDIR%\Panther
Log location of Setup actions after disk configuration.
    %WINDIR%\Inf\Setupapi*.log
Used to log Plug and Play device installations.
    %WINDIR%\Memory.dmp
Location of memory dump from bug checks.
    %WINDIR%\Minidump\*.dmp
Location of log minidumps from bug checks.
    %WINDIR%\System32\Sysprep\Panther
    Location of Sysprep logs.

Cliff S thanks for the pointer. The directory C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther has a number of files named like "CompatData_2016_08_09_10_32_59_3_006f0018.xml". This being the final one at around the time the process failed. The last entry in there is.

    Code:
    </DriverPackages><Programs><Program Id="000058ebb4dc35c5076f0b8d1d8e34d797f80000ffff" IconId="000058ebb4dc35c5076f0b8d1d8e34d797f80000ffff"><CompatibilityInfo BlockingType="Hard" StatusDetail="UpgradeBlock"/><Action Name="ManualUninstall" DisplayStyle="Text" ResolveState="NotRun"/>
Any idea how I find out what that program ID belongs to?

I haven't tried a clean install of Education edition with it. I can try after work today. I used the standard Media Creation Tool from here:
    Windows 10

I used the standard option for just plain "Windows 10" in the drop down list, English US, both 32-bit and 64-bit because I have a couple of 32-bit installations as well as 64-bit.
Just booted from that ISO, selected 64 bit setup, selected I don't have a key and Education is in the list. The options are Pro, Home, Home Single Language and Education. Thanks for pointing that out.

I stopped there though. I don't want to wipe the current install just yet. This thumb drive will become my universal install media though.

It didn't show up here either on three desktops or a 10 laptop. What method did you try after downloading the iso? Here I grabbed a 3rd party app previously found reliable and simply mounted the iso on a virtual optical drive to run each upgrade in order to update all four pcs. For once with that many upgrade installs not one problem seen.

The new VM just seen on the second of the month only saw the options for Home or Pro and not Education there. I ran that fast mainly for getting the build number to compare otherwise with the last few Insider builds. Of course I still have the 14279 files as well as install.wim here along with the 316, 328, other Tech Bench downloads in both 32/64 flavors for dual edition isos.

Is there a Wmdiagerr.xml or diagerr.xml file present as well? When the online upgrade by MC Tool failed I ran into the two of those as well as another but not viewed by the same means to derive the SetupHost.exe type error. Driverpackage would be updates the 10 installer is either to unpack or download to install.

IF you right click to open with WordPad you might find a similar error to: "Exe="C:\$Windows.~WS\Sources\SetupHost.Exe" Mod="SetupHost.Exe" Err="12180" " when going over the complete breakdown. You will need through most of the expanded view however to find something being pointed to in particular.
