Really not happy about this. I always disable the lock screen as I have no use for it & it just adds a unwanted step to me logging into windows, I also used some of the other policies that are being removed to tweak Windows 10 to my usage. I paid for the pro version so I would be able to do this & now MS has the nerve to remove them. This is only being done as most sensible folk disable the app spam on the start menu. so guess what is coming to a lock screen near you soon.

I don't even have Cortana on my W10. I'm running a local account and I have disabled all search services. I think it can't function in such environment.
I can assure you that Cortana is still running, alive and kicking. You just can't get rid of her that easily.
Just check Taskmanager and be awed.

Apparently MS is really trying to make PC enthusiasts switch to Linux I've always been a strong supporter of Windows. But with the latest developments like how they tried to trick users into upgrading to Windows 10, the promise to provide unlimited OneDrive storage that has been broken because some people actually made use of it, the privacy issues and now an updated that limits peoples choices of how they want to run the OS they paid for... I'm not that sure anymore if I really want to stick around. Good thing I decided to start learning Linux. Now I've reached a level that would actually allow me to ditch Windows.

    Hi,

Sure, I understand that. Being on the Insider Preview program and all that.
There are still workarounds possible but not through gpedit any longer.

Basically, what it amounts to is that MS wants to be sure it can push anything it catches money for to our W10 machines.
I don't think the IT guys are going to like that.

Wasn't Cortana always hard to disable right from the first editions of W10 ?
According to MS it was/is an integral part of the OS and therefore could not be removed. Well, yeah....Sort of... LOL.

    Cheers,
Cortana is removed in Education (anniversary update) and the new Pro Education. If that company has a Software Assurance contract the IT guy can just switch editions. IMHO they should have called it Pro Enterprise.

Not trying to be a smart @ss, but, if even half the people that threatened to switch to Linux, actually followed through, things likely would be a lot different. Most don't actually follow through with those threats though. They just keep on using Windows.

Of course and you can even push it further but I'll shut up.
Point is you nor me can buy these versions of Windows which I feel is a shame..... Irony is, we would be paying through our noses to actually get less. Well less crap that is.

There are versions around without Edge (which still does not work as it should anyway), without Media Player and what have you. Basically a desktop version as I and many Win7 adepts would have liked to have but guess what, MS has a different agenda.
They bring commerce to you now straight to what you thought was YOUR desktop.

Whose threatens who here? Considering switching to Linux and expressing that thought is a threat in your eyes? Fact is, the reasons to stick with Windows despite it's shortcomings like it's price, it's security risks etc. are getting fewer and fewer, especially because Linux has come a long way when it comes to multimedia and even gaming. Plus I'm not a hardcore gamer anymore. So under these circumstances considering a change over to the Linux side just seems reasonable to me.

The day I see the first ad on my desktop that cannot be switched off will definitely be the day of my departure from the Windows world. I'd definitely not accept a paid product to show me ads. On my hardware, with my electricity that I pay for, in my house, sorry but no way. Period.

Apologies "threat" may have been a poor choice of words. Maybe I should have said "those contemplating" or something. I meant no offense. I think you get my point though. I see lots of "I'm switching to Linux Posts" but those users keep on posting Windows related questions etc. They don't follow through.

Open your eyes, you're already right in the middle of it. Like it or not.
That said, I'm no different from you and balk at it in the same way. I just don't like it but then we are very European in our way of thinking.
I am probably much, much worse than you.....
