Cumulative Update KB3176927 for Windows 10 Insider Build 14393.5
-
Although I liked the tweaks and improvements that v1607 offers over v1511,. after two weeks of various issues, including one major security permissions one (the dreaded "access denied" error 0x80070005) which prevented me from installing or updating Windows Store games and apps previously located on my H: drive, I have decided to restore back to v1511, which fixes all the issues I had, until the official release on the 2nd August. I will then take another backup, as I always do before upgrading Windows, and pray that the upgrade doesn't mess up my security permissions again. Prior to reverting back to v1511 though, I encountered other annoying issues such as my Outlook account settings suddenly becoming out of date in the Mail app (likely triggered by me restoring my PC back a few hours to a manual checkpoint) and a bug which prevents me from saving folder views settings for libraries.
At least with the final build, I should have an option to do a repair install, something which you don't have the luxury of doing with the Insider Preview builds. Aside from the bugs I experienced, the Anniversary build (if that is what v1607 Build 14393.5) was 100% stable and felt faster in use than v1511, I also liked the improved Start menu enough to actually use it over Start10 as well.
You can do a repair install. You just need to convert the install.esd file to an iso if not deleted.

Ah, thanks, didn't know that. Still, it's another option for the final build when it is released next week.

Had to clean install 14393. It picked up 14393.5 straight away.

You might want to restore all settings back to default prior to the upgrade, then re-apply then afterwards. I know that's a pain, but it may be the only way. Or, backup your system and do a clean install, which I know is also a pain, but at least "resets" you to a baseline.

I am running the IP on a SSD partition on my laptop and on a HDD partition on my desktop and none have reported this issue. So this seems like a rare but sadly unfortunate bug.
Hope it gets resolved for all affected.

My drive D: (240gb SSD) disappeared when I upgraded to the 14393 insider version. I pulled that SSD and formatted it on another machine then put it back. It has been running fine now. I blamed the problem on the SSD because it is more than 5 years old. Maybe I was wrong about that.
