I remember reading that as well, Kari. No idea where though.

On August 2, Microsoft's update servers will begin delivering the Windows 10 Anniversary Update (version 1607) to current installations of Windows 10 that have been running for at least 30 days.

Even that in my opinion supports this. To be sure a Windows 10 user who used the free upgrade offer during its last month cannot roll back to their 7 or 8.1, they will only get 1607 upgrade after their roll back period is ended.

Makes sense. Time to decide which way to go MS thinks....

That was mentioned on the Microsoft Yammer group. It was suggested that the 30 day rollback option would delay you from being able to upgrade to the Anniversary edition. Assuming you waited to the last minute. 30 days from when you did the free upgrade. I didn't see any actual confirmation though?

EDIT: Forgot to mention, if you overrode that, and did the upgrade anyway, no rollback to your original OS you did the free upgrade from.

    Hi,

They're really trying hard to lock it down but frankly I can hardly believe that message.
What it should say is that if you roll back to W7 now you may loose your entitlement to W10's free upgrade.
Doesn't that make more sense ?

    Cheers,
No, it doesn't make any sense at all FDE, because once a machine is legally upgraded to Windows 10 and activated, you can reinstall as many times as you want. Microsoft told us that some time back, but I don't remember when.

No, that is true. I am desperately trying to find the article I read about this. It is not possible to roll back to Windows 7 and 8.1 from Anniversary Update. If you want to keep that possibility you need to upgrade to 1511, make a system image then upgrade to 1607. When you then want to roll back you need first restore the 1511 image, then roll back.

I keep looking the article, will post the link when I found it. There's easy way for you to test this Badrobot, launch upgrade from 1511 ISO and that warning is not shown.
Actually, it makes sense because the Free Upgrade ended two days before the Anniversary Edition was released. I don't remember for sure, but I think that in the past when we upgraded from one OS to the next, we couldn't roll back?

The tone of everything I have read from Microsoft suggests that all (including 10240 and 1511 and everything in between up to 14939) Windows 10 installations will have this update delivered via Windows Update as soon as the servers can deliver.

If you want to keep "legacy" Windows 10 versions running, you may need to make provisions for this soon.

That imaginary scenario was based on those countless threads here and all around the Interwebs starting to emerge late last week where various OPs complain that they missed the free upgrade because their hardware manufacturer's didn't have working drivers.

Of course in my opinion it's their own fault, these users have chosen wrong hardware.
Exactamento!...;) Of course it's their own fault...;) If the manufacturer of their hardware didn't provide a Win10 driver when they bought it, or otherwise guarantee to provide one at a future date--he is not obligated to provide a WIn10 driver for his hardware. But it is amusing to hear these kinds of spurious complaints pop up--I knew without doubt that after bitching so long about Microsoft trying to give them a free OS that there would be people complaining when the upgrade period expired. I can set my watch by this kind of thing, actually...;)
