The desktop is in the hospital after I hosed it.
Turns out I didn't hose my desktop after all! I took it up to my friendly neighborhood shop yesterday evening and went back this afternoon to check on it and he hadn't gotten to it. I had taken my bootable flash drive with Build 10074 on it to see if it would boot the 'puter and Yay! it did. So I went ahead and installed Windows 10 Build 10074 on it and tested right there. Everything worked as it should so I brought it home.

Hooked everything up and the *^&$()__&^$% stupid computer refused to boot! Frickle Frackle stupid jerk computer! So unplugged everything but keyboard, mouse and monitor and still no boot.

OK, go out into storage building, dig out old square monitor, bring it in, hook it up and holy crapola! the computer boots right up! I really didn't think it would be the monitor, because I could see BIOS setup and all that, so . . .

At any rate, I'm typing on my desktop with this butt ugly square monitor. It'll probably be a little while before I can get another nice 23/24" monitor again. Computer shop guy said he may be able to fix the monitor for me if it's a capacitor or something simple. He works on TVs, so I guess he's up to monitor work too. Better him than moi!

Not HDMI. And not the original connector. That other one. It says what it is when it's not plugged in, but the connectors are not HDMI like the ones on TVs.

I'll have to get back to you on this when I power down to see if the original connector cable makes it work, which I doubt. But what do I know . . . Other than that I absolutely hate, hate, hate coinkidinks! I mean how many times would you expect a monitor to crap out at the exact same time I tried to boot from my flash drive!?!?

It's possible that the only video port that works after installation is VGA. After the first windows update (drivers), check if the other monitor is working.

Yeh, yeh, yeh, that be it! I couldn't for the life of me think of it! So I'm going to power down in a few and check to see if the other cable will make it work. Like I said, I don't expect it to, but nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I've never seen that myself. Usually all the ports either work or don't work. You just get the default low resolution from the standard windows driver, but I've always had a signal on DVI and HDMI. Some monitors are fussy about what resolution they will display though. You'll see the BIOS screen because its a low resolution but they go black when Windows loads and you've set a resolution they don't like. There is a F8 safe mode option to get around the, its called standard VGA or something similar.

I unplugged the DVI cable from the old monitor and used it to plug this [older] monitor in with and it works fine, so I know that's not the problem. Right?

Windows update downloaded from Microsoft and installed earlier today. That's how I figured out the monitor that was working one minute, but not the next is flaky.

Edit: That should be Build 10074 instead of Windows update.
