What is the importance of getting the version number to be even?
Yeah - I was wondering that. They simply chose 1607 when it was belived it would be bought out on the anniversary ie Juky 29th.

I suspect the moving of date a couple of days or so is simply because 29th falls on a Friday, and 2nd August is a Tuesday, to fit in with their normal release practice i.e techies burn the midnight oil over weekend, and the "bosses" approve release of stuff on Monday.

Also, it is not 100% clear when year 1 actually ends e.g. beginning, middle, end of July 29th, US or local time.

Now it is totally clear, you have to upgrade to 10586 first to get free upgrade, so no point (unless dumb or uninformed) to leave it to the last day. You could see the posts now "WTF - I waited to upgrade to Anniversary update on July 29th to avoid upgrading to older version first but the deadline has passed"!

What does this prove or mean?
    I don't know, but...
It could also mean the will finish the code part soon, and start "seeding" this month(hence 1607), and then after any final touch ups, put it out on the 2nd(who wants to deal with non-techies on a Monday on the telephone or digitally. I mean I can't even deal with myself on Mondays!).

The code that 'ships' on August 2nd will have been completely baked and decided upon in July. It will be version 1607, has been for a few builds now.

I suspect they might very well extended the free upgrade, but don't want to announce it yet as it might delay people from upgrading.

They gave people one year.. I don't see any extension occurring.

I don't, either. They have made it very clear and firm that there will be no extension, and I don't see how they back off of that without huge loss of credibility. And I've seen reminders of the 29th cutoff popping up in all kinds of places on their various web services, etc. No, if you want a free upgrade, July 29th is it I think...

Actually they're giving them one year and a day. This is a Leap Year. :) IMHO if they haven't upgraded by now chances are they're not going to.
