That dialog asking the PIN or password if no PIN is set is occasionally shown when you sign in to Windows with a local account but you have entered your MS account credentials for some service or services requiring MS account, for example Store, Windows Insider builds in Update, OneDrive and so on.
    thanks Kari
I have onedrive running on it but not had this problem till the new update
I'll sign in and see if that stops it

Basically that PIN is only asked for a confirmation that it really is you the local account owner who set up a service using an MS account. Enter your PIN and that's it.

I have a series of Hyper-V virtual machines in several languages which I only use to get Insider build upgrades, all set up only with a local account. In all of them I need to confirm it's me by entering the PIN after every upgrade when Settings tell me that I have to fix my Insider build settings. Been there, done it, no problems.

    It starts with a notification:

    Then "Making sure it's you":

Screenshots from just now after upgrading one vm and checking it is ready to get Insider builds.

Should I still do a clean install of Windows 10 Anniversary update? I used the Windows 10 NEW start clean tool, then reinstalled all other software slowly and surely, should I still grab ISO from Media Creation tool, and still do a clean install sometime, not sure when will get to, but I can do one if needed.

Went with Avast for protection, as couldn't stand Defenders 8-9 hour full scan time, which I usually run monthly, but even then way too long in my eyes.

First of all I did the update via the standard update tool and had no trouble. That said, I'm not sure if there's a difference between the start clean tool and the ISO. My understanding is they work the same, but I'll let others on here discuss that.

Not sure how the ordinary person is getting on trying to update to build 1607.....probably tearing their hair out going by my own experience which is as follows.

Surface Pro 4....after update unusable....recovery and a reset got it working apart from their flagship app, Windows Hello Face and Pin recognition.
Spent ages chatting to an M$ expert on line...eventually he advised reinstall through a link he gave specially for SP4 complete with updated drivers...three quarters of the way through this came to an abrupt stop stating unsuccessful....this took about a wasted hour.

Desktop and Gaming laptop repeatedly came up with same error 0x80070057.
M$ support pages suggestions turned out to either no longer exist or were useless.

Now I have been on the insider program for the last two years, and have never had so many problems regarding updating.
How on earth have M$ made such a pigs ear of this is beyond belief....what worries me is I have recommended W10 to so many.

Do you have ext drives hooked up when doing a FULL scan? If you do, and you do not have exclusions set up, you are probably scanning TBs of data that is not necessary. If that is your case, try adding exclusions so you only are doing a FULL on your "C" drive...

I spent th whole evening in Chat with a MS tech who worked hard to deal with my small SSD, trying different options, but eventually stopped before carrying out the install --- maybe his shift had come to an end? Even my single Restore / Shadow Copy was removed. Anyway, I will try MS again tomorrow, hoping to carry on where he left off, with luck. Various things are now on my computer, such as the Upgrade Assistant, ISO, MCT and just before he stopped I saw a notification saying that (only) 300 mb more was required. So maybe I am close to a successful conclusion.

Every day for months I have used around half a dozen junk cleaning tools, Enhanced CCleaner etc., so I fear there is not much if any scope for further cleaning. Windows' own Disk Cleanup Tool is probably the least effective of all the tools I use. Each one makes some contribution to freeing up storage space.

Only was C:\ drive, and 1 External USB 3.0 flash drive, my external backup/music drive wasn't connected at the time I did the first full scan, Am willing to try again though, with no usb external or flash drive connected and see how it goes

Should not take 8-9 hours. If that thumb drive is large and has lots of small files, particularly compressed and/or zipped, that would really bog it down.

Thumb Drive is just 32gb, will try again tomorrow with it disconnected, and Avast properly removed, and see how it does
