That's how I have my user folders. So if anything happened to the OS, I can just reinstall in about 20 minutes and be up and running again.
Ditto, on a clean install I delete all but my data partition/drive. Then just change the folder location's so Windows can find my files. This time around though, that drive showed up as unallocated/ I just repartitioned and reformatted that drive, and restored my files from backup. All is well gain. As far as I can tell anyway. I have no idea what happened?

There's been a few reports of user's drive partitions getting messed up. When I do the install tomorrow I shall unplug the other drives.

You should have tried a program like EaseUS Partition Master, see if it could have recovered the partitions. Sounds to me like the partition table got messed up some how.

I'm not sure they are the same. I'll let you explain it to me.
OK, let me explain: I misread and posted wrong link.

There was just the one partition on that drive. I had a backup and just copied the files back. It took a little while over USB but its done now. I might have lost a file or two but nothing I can't download again when the time comes. No big deal other than the inconvenience of coping it all back again.

    Hi,

Not everyone knows what they're doing. Most users will simply wait for Windows Update to install it and won't even know about the hidden installation folder.
My point exactly. Not everyone is an MCE and neither should they be.

One could go philosophical about the strategy but it's mostly well thought out market strategy which in essence is not much more than applied psychology.
Widen the horizon a bit further and count the cash in the till. IOW: Economy and politics or vice versa.

    All in good spirit.

    Cheers,

Probably should have mentioned. My install was a legacy install of 10 Pro upgraded to 10 Education, via change product key. The only two partitions on my SSD are the system Reserved and Windows partition. On my 1TB spinner there was just the one partition.

Am I correct in thinking that if you want an UEFI install you need to install to an unallocated partition?

Like cereberus says, the data may still be there. Download Mini Tool Partition Wizard free and run it. It will show the drives and partitions.

Rt click the problem one and click 'Explore'. Does it throw up an explorer screen showing folders and files? I had a drive like yours a while ago and managed to use the mini tool explorer to copy data to another drive. I then reformatted the drive and copied files back.

But, if you don't have a large disk to copy files to...........

You might also see if you can give it a drive letter. It may take a drive letter but when you exit mini tool that drive letter may disappear.

It is a worry that an update can do this as 350 million computers need updating and most of these won't be owned by 'experts'.

    Good luck.
If it is just the partition table, minitool just repairs it in seconds, and drive is recovered. I accidentally deleted a partition and minitool just dif the job.
