Microsoft tweaks activation rules for Windows 10 Anniversary Update

When you click on the link (ex: in IE11), you should be prompted to "Allow" access to open the Feedback Hub app on your computer to the "Reactivating Windows 10 after a hardware change" announcement.
Only if you are logged in with a MS account. If using a local account you get a 404 error.

Wow!!!! That is a phenomenal change.

but ... but ... but
The announcement was buried in the release notes for build 14371 of Windows 10, released a few days ago.
But does it actually work? I'm not running an Insider build at the moment. I have plans to load one up on my spare tower I just haven't found my round toit. Once I find that I can get going.

Don't know ... I also do not have Insider running. Maybe one of the members running it could confirm.
Inquiring minds want to know

The link works on Insider Builds as far as the App is concerned but, I'm not going to re-install the Feedback Hub.

I cannot see "Add a Microsoft Account" option under Settings/Update& security/Activation in Build 14372:

I would say It's not fully implemented yet? The activation server side of things likely isn't turned on yet.

It is again typical MS confusion - why are they so incapable of explaining things.
MS say it is automatically connected if you have logged in to an MSA account.
As far as I can make out, you only see the add account link if you are logged in with a local account.
When I clicked that link all it seems to do is change your login to an MSA.
Then you can see device on your account if you login to account on web.
Now here's the thing - if you go back to a local account, the registered device disappears again!
So I am unclear if the so called add account link does anything else reallyother than changing to an MSA account.

from the article "effective with the Anniversary Update coming this summer". It's not enabled yet.
I think you have the best answer, Kerry
Windows GUI won't be updated until the 1607 release. This makes the most sense to me - why would MS register millions of Insider keys with this method?
Here's the short version:
Beginning with the Anniversary Update, version 1607, you'll be able to link a Windows 10 digital license with a Microsoft account.
This linkage occurs automatically if you're signed in with a Microsoft account when you upgrade to version 1607.
For anyone else, including those with local or domain accounts,
this step is optional. In any case, it applies only to those who have a Windows 10 digital license. That group consists primarily of those who took advantage of the year-long free upgrade offer that ends on July 29, 2016.
I would venture a guess that this feature is only implemented for internal testing.
It won't be confusing until MS releases 1607

@ Slartybart They aren't storing keys, just linking your Digital Entitlement for the device to your Microsoft ID. Insiders are likely all running with the same generic key. Just like those running with the Consumer version with Digital Entitlements. But yes, why do it now. Some code just slipped through is all. And likely some testing internally at Microsoft.
